Marvel Teases New Avengers Game For iOS

Marvel has been sending out a few teasers for an upcoming game for the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad that looks very Avengers-esque. The first tease, above, shows a huge Hulk and the classic comic versions of Thor, Captain America, and Iron Man in a somewhat destroyed city. The slogan, “Something massive is smashing onto mobile from Marvel,” along with the presence of the Avengers, more or less confirms that something very exciting is on the way.

The next tease is the trailer below. It includes the Ultimate/movie version of SHIELD’s Nick Fury announcing a space pulse that causes a super-villain escape from the Vault prison, giving the green light on the Avengers Initiative. This pulls from the Marvel movies, but also ties it into plot points from Brian Michael Bendis’ New Avengers comic book run. In addition to Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, and the Hulk, Hawkeye is also seen with a mask (but not his classic comic get-up) and the Black Widow.

For those not up to speed with the comic books, Bendis destroyed the classic Avengers (Thor, Captain America, Iron Man, Hawkeye, etc.) in a Disassembled storyline. He then blew open a prison full of super-villains in order to assemble a new Justice-League like team of more popular superheroes, like Wolverine and Spiderman.

At the end of the trailer, Nick Fury says he’s going to split up the heroes, sending them to individual missions, while enacting the Avengers Initiative (probably to make playing the game more manageable).

Everything in the video game is a re-mix, so it’s hard to know who and what all will be involved, but it’s likely to be the classic/movie team with a lot of modern/comics plot points.

There have been a lot of Marvel games to date, usually released around the same time as the movie version. However, the highly-popular Avengers movie didn’t get a same-day game release, so this is likely the corresponding game. The other games have been good, so hopefully this will be more of the same engaging, action-packed fun.
