Square Buys New York Design Agency 80/20

Jack Dorsey, the founder of Twitter and Square, has announced today on Twitter that Square has purchased New York design agency 80/20. Dorsey tweeted, “Square acquires 80/20, one of the best design agencies in the world, and with it, an office in SoHo. We believe in NYC.”

So, what is this 80/20? According to its website, “We’re interface design specialists, completely focused on crafting unforgettable experiences, on making products and platforms better, smarter and easier to use.”

Given the simple and fantastically minimal design Square has already implemented, the purchase of 80/20 comes as a bit of a surprise. 80/20 is comprised of three ex-Adobe designers, and the company has worked on projects for Motorola, Warner Bros., Verizon, and other major brands. It’s also a bit surprising that Square has just purchased a design team in New York City, considering Square calls San Francisco home.

Looks like the popular credit card processing company is about to get just a little bit prettier, if that’s even possible.
