Naperville, Illinois, Apple Store robbed (again)

The Main Place Apple Store located at 120 West Jefferson, Naperville, Illinois was robbed again for the third time in seven months. The first robbery occurred on September 22nd, 2010, and the robbers got away with $24,000 worth of equipment. The second robbery occurred on January 16th, 2011, and that time the goods taken were worth $30,000.

The most recent robbery occurred this morning at 4:31 AM andĀ netted the perpetrators $30,000 worth of equipment. The robbers were in and out of the store in just over a minute, using tote bags to tote off their haul of goodies. As with many Apple Store robberies, a rock was thrown through the front window and the robbers entered through the newly made hole.

This is my local Apple Store where I most recently purchased my iPad 2. It’s disheartening to think that robbers feel that stealing over $84,000 worth of equipment in seven months is a smart idea. I don’t think that the thieves understand that Apple knows EVERY single serial number of the equipment on display in their stores. While it’s not difficult to rename a Mac, it is somewhat more difficult to falsify a serial number. My guess is that we’ll soon see this loot turning up on eBay or craigslist.

I hate to say it, but Apple may need to ruin their aesthetic and put in a locked steel barrier that is pulled down at night and pushed out of the way in the morning in order to prevent more robberies. However, maybe Apple is willing to maintain their aesthetic at the cost of better security.
