Droplr has announced that they’ll be ending their free tier offering, leaving a bunch of people who may not have a budget for the service out in the cold. We don’t blame them, it’s expensive to run a company these days. That said, you should probably be aware of one of the better alternatives on the market. Cloudup, acquired back in September by Automattic (the fine folks behind WordPress) offers much of the same features as Droplr and it’s offering a free tier.
You can share anything using the service, either right from the browser or a Mac app, making it easy to send videos, photos, music, links, and files to friends and family in the exact same way as Droplr: drag and drop.
Much like iPhoto for iOS has PhotoStream, Cloudup has streams as well that you can set up with people, and then invite them to view everything that’s been shared in the stream. It’s ideal for teams who work remotely that need to share files constantly.
Cloudup isn’t currently open to the public, but they’ve been kind enough to send us an invite code so that we can get all of our readers moved over quickly before Droplr shuts down its services to anyone who isn’t paying for their lite tiers of service.
The fine folks at Cloudup will let you upload and store 1000 files for free (files can be upto 200MB in size), and a paid upgrade option will be available shortly. The company is also working on iPhone and iPad applications. Until they’re released, you can add Cloudup to your homescreen and use the webapp. It pretty much works like a native application anyway.
