It’s an inevitability really. Retina displays will eventually be in all of Apple’s products. They’ll be in the iMac, they’ll be in the MacBook Airs, and they’ll even be in those Cinema displays at some point in the near future. Today, however, Apple pushed the Retina display into its second MacBook Pro. Phil Schiller took to the stage today to announce that the 13-inch MacBook Pro will now ship with a Retina display. Apple plans on offering both a Retina-capable and non-Retina version of the laptop for the near future.
The new 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro is 20 percent thinner, and weighs in at just 3.5 pounds (a full pound lighter than the non-Retina version). The new Retina MacBook Pro also has a FaceTime HD camera, stereo speakers and everything else you’ve come to expect from a MacBook Pro. Oh, the display also has twice the number of pixels as a typical HD television and a pixel density of 227 pixels per inch, which works out to being over 4 times the number of pixels as the current, non-Retina 13-inch MacBook Pro.
Like the iMacs announced earlier, the 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro also has 75 percent less reflection and 28 percent more contrast than the current MacBook Pro version. From the sounds of it, the MacBook Pro will not have Apple’s new Fusion technology when it comes to storage, offering an all-flash hard-drive instead of the new hybrid model in the iMac.
The stock 13-inch MacBook Pro starts at $1699, and includes 8GB of RAM, a 128GB Flash Drive (upgradable to 750GB), and 2.5 GHz i5 CPU and ships immediately from Apple.
Apple is also keeping the non-Retina MacBook Pro and that version now starts at $1199.
