Apple Admits To Mail Issues In Mavericks, Offers Cumbersome Solution

It may be too little, way too late considering Mavericks shipped over three months ago, but Apple has finally acknowledged that something’s a bit rotten in the state of Mail.app. The company has begun addressing concerns that many have when it comes to doing simple things like deleting and moving emails between inboxes and folders. Well, actually, by address we mean offer a workaround.

In a support document published on its website, Apple suggests you do the following:

Quitting and reopening Mail forces t to re-establish a connection to the email server. You can use these steps to receive new mail messages without quitting Mail:

  1. Choose Mailbox > Take All Accounts Offline.
  2. Choose Mailbox > Get All New Mail.

As a shortcut, you can also add the Take All Accounts Offline and Get Mail buttons to your Mail toolbar.

  1. Choose View > Customize Toolbar.
  2. Drag the Take All Accounts Offline button to the Toolbar if it is not there already.
  3. Drag the Get Mail button to the Toolbar if it is not there already.
  4. Click Done

To receive new mail messages, click the Take Offline button, then click the Check Mail button.

I left Mail.app behind long ago, much like iTunes it needs a reworking in a major way. It’s sluggish, and now it seems people are having a ton of problems with basic email tasks. That’s unacceptable. Luckily there are plenty of other offerings.

Hopefully Apple has a solution on the way in a Mavericks update.
