Sony To Battle Apple And Samsung For Top Smartphone Spot

If you’re someone looking to buy a top of the line smartphone, odds are the two choices you’re looking at are the iPhone 5 and Samsung’s Galaxy S3. Sony is now saying it wants to make a phone that will compete directly with these two devices.

“We will create in the near future a flagship model that can compete with Apple’s iPhone and Samsung’s Galaxy S III,” said Sony’s CVP of Sale and Marketing, Dennis van Schie. People are speculating that the phone Sony’s referencing is the rumoured upcoming phone with the code name Sony Yuga.

The rumours that have circulated about the Yuga pin it as having a quad-core Snapdragon S4 processor, a 5-inch 1080p display, 2GB of RAM and a 12 megapixel camera. It is also expected to break past the normal Sony trend and feature on-screen buttons rather than physical buttons.

When Sony’s phone is finally released, it will be running a version of Android’s Jelly Bean. When asked about their plans for Windows Phone, Sony said it isn’t currently their focus, but that it is watching the popularity of the platform and would be willing to create devices for it in the future if its popularity continues to increase.

It’s definitely a good thing to see some other companies try to capture the spot that Apple and Samsung have been holding so firmly. If Sony can create a phone that competes with Apple and Samsung’s offerings, it could be a refreshing new option for consumers.
