ClassicMap App Gives Native Google Maps Back To iOS 6

If you’re not happy with Apple Maps, like most people aren’t, and yearn for a simpler time when your iPhone had Google Maps, then there may be a solution for you. ClassicMap, created by Katsumi Kishikawa, is free on the App Store and gives you back the native Google Maps to your iOS 6 device, but it’s much more basic.

When in Standard mode, it looks much like the data from Apple Maps in iOS 6, but if you flip up the bottom right corner and hit Classic, you’ll be back where you were in iOS 5 with Google Maps. Almost. It looks a lot like the Google Maps we’ve all come to know and love, but it’s much more basic and lacks a lot of the key features that made it so great.

There’s no direction-finding functionality, Street View, or Points of Interest and it’s a bit slower than the original. But it does work and will get you where you need to go. ClassicMap shows you where you are and the search function shows you the places you want to go. It has map, satellite and hybrid views in both Apple and Google modes.

For those who like to look at the technical side of things, the whole project is up on GitHub so you can download and play around with it. It’s totally free, so if you want Maps the way it used to be (sort of), then head over to the App Store to download it.
