Amazon Introduces Two New Kindle Fires

September is a pretty big month for tech. Nokia and Motorola both introduced new phones yesterday while Apple is set to release a new iPhone next week. Amazon also got in on the fun by introducing two new Kindle Fire tablets: the Kindle Fire HD and the Kindle Fire HD 8.9″. Both of these Kindles offer tons of new features over the origonal Kindle Fire, which received a $40 price drop, twice the RAM and a 40 percent faster CPU.

The Kindle Fire HD features a 7-inch display with an HD resolution of 1920×800. The tablet is powered by a dual-core OMAP 4460 CPU, which is clocked at 1.2GHz with an unspecified amount of RAM. You can grab the Kindle Fire HD in 16GB and 32GB variations, are priced at $199 and $249 respectively. Amazon also seems to be boasting that the Kindle Fire HD offers dual-band Wi-Fi, which apparently receives faster download speeds over the new iPad.

The Kindle Fire HD 8.9″ features a slightly faster 1.5GHz dual-core CPU as well as 8.9-inch display with an impressive resolution of 1920×1200. The Kindle Fire HD 8.9″ is offered in two variants: Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi + 4G LTE. In the United States, the Kindle Fire runs on AT&T’s LTE network, which is sure to grind the gears of some potential buyers. One interesting thing about the Kindle Fire HD with LTE is Amazon’s exclusive data plan. For $49 USD per year, users can use up to 250mb of cellular data per month. If you’d like to purchase a Kindle Fire HD 8.9″ for yourself, expect to drop $299 for a 16GB Wi-Fi only model or $369 for a 32GB Wi-Fi model. If you feel like stepping into the LTE zone, expect to drop $499 or $599 for either a 16GB or 32GB model.

Amazon has also announced “Kindle FreeTime” alongside the new Kindle Fire line. With Kindle FreeTime, parents can limit which apps their kids use as well as limit the amount of time their child can use the Kindle Fire. Kindle FreeTime will be included with all Kindle Fire tablets free of charge.
