Rumor: Microsoft bringing Office to the iPad, Mac App Store next year

Microsoft has been eating up the news cycle this week by releasing a bunch of products for iOS. It seems like the releases will keep on coming in 2012 with Microsoft gearing up to bring Office to the iPad, as well as the Mac App Store.

From The Daily:

According to sources, the tech giant is actively working on adapting its popular software suite for Apple’s tablet … In addition to an iPad-ready version, a new edition of Office is expected for OS X Lion sometime next year. The current version of the desktop package, Office 2011, officially supports iOS versions up to Snow Leopard. A Lion version, likely available via the Mac App Store, is widely expected. Windows, too, is due for an update, with Office 2012 currently in beta form.

We can’t help but get excited about the possibilities. Currently, the only real Office-like option available on the Mac App Store and iPad is Apple’s own iWork suite. Apple lets users purchase applications from the suite on a piece-by-piece basis where needed. If you only want Pages, you can buy only Pages. There’s no word on whether or not Microsoft will offer up the same kind of solution to consumers.
