Jawbone UP, FREE today, kinda, but supplies likely gone or pulled

Hosain Rahman, CEO of Jawbone, announced a generous no questions asked refund program for anyone who has purchased a Jawbone UP. The product is slated to be pulled from shelves and is no longer for sale, though a few retailers haven’t gotten that message down to the store level yet, so if you hurry, you may be able to snatch one.

We recognize that this product has not yet lived up to everyone’s expectations – including our own – so we’re taking action

Jawbone UP, the silently awesome fitness tracker, was received with much fanfare. This inconspicuous little bracelet sits quitely without any indictation that it’s doing anything, all the while logging your activity. (think pedometer on steroids). You can download data from it directly to your computer for some pretty impressive statistics and habit tracking.

This announcement comes on the heels of reports of failing batteries and bricked bracelets. The issues being experienced have been traced back to faulty capacitors used in production that fail to hold their rated charge. This results in a power system that simply doesn’t work.

Jawbone has been great about replacing defective units but the demand must have gotten too great, and this new program was announced.

To qualify for the program, you must meet some requirements:

  • You must have bought an UP from someone allowed to sell them (duh).
  • You have to agree not to resell it, or return to the retailer.

These are pretty loose restrictions here, and as long as you aren’t a complete douchebag, you can probably agree to them pretty easily. If you do decide to douche it up though, it’s important to remember that every band is serial numbered, so you probably will get busted.

To apply for your refund you’ll need to likely provide some basic info, like name, address and serial number. A form will be available on Jawbone’s site later today.
