Apple contemplating a new data center in Facebook’s backyard

All eyes are on Oregon for a new Apple data centerRumor has it that Apple is currently contemplating joining Google, Facebook, and Amazon in Oregon with a brand new data center, just a quarter of a mile south of the Facebook server farm, and not too far from Google’s farm.

The company had a team examining Facebook’s Prineville facility last summer on the same day The Oregonian visited the site … Apple’s Oregon plans have been in flux while it awaited word on whether there would be adequate electricity transmission in Prineville to meet its needs.

The rumor from OregonLive goes on to point out that Apple is looking to expand its data server capacity for its new iCloud service, which seems pretty obvious at this point. iTunes Match has to eat up a lot of storage and computing power and electricity. “Oregon’s mild climate and relatively low power costs are part of the draw, but tax breaks are the big attraction,” according to The OregonLive article.

In a somewhat humorous aside, Apple is allegedly working under the codename Maverick in the dealings. So, the question remains, is Prineville, Oregon, considered Goose in this negotiation? Or, is it Iceman?
