The news is out. The iPhone 5 will look almost identical to the rumors we’ve seen floating around the Internet for the last 4 months, at least if we’re going to believe the new case images floating around the Internet today. The funny thing is we don’t believe it at all.
According to Macitynet (link goes to Italian website), they were able to physically hold the case and compare it to other cases popping up on the market. They seem to think that the fact that all these cases have a similar build points to the cases being legitimate. Their findings seem to indicate that the next iPhone, the iPhone 5, should be thinner, wider, and a lot more like the current iPod touch.
We still don’t buy it.
Why people continue to think that case companies get their hands on iPhone dimensions before an announcement or shipment, I’ll never know, especially considering all the evidence that we’ve seen that Apple locks down their pre-release devices pretty heavily (except maybe the ones found in bars).
On numerous occasions we’ve heard that Apple only gives cellular carriers obfuscated devices, covered up and locked down in a way that renders it impossible to tell how the phone looks. Why then would Apple turn around and give case makers the exact dimensions of their cases?
Consider this quote from the Guardian:
The next iPhones go for their testing inside locked and sealed boxes so that the carriers can carry out checks on their network compatibility in their labs. It’s very high security, as you could guess; my understanding is that barely anyone inside the carriers gets to open those boxes, and even when they do the hardware is encased in a dummy body which means there’s no clue to what the actual phone will do.
Do you still think Apple’s going to give case manufactures the dimensions to the next-gen iPhone?
It makes absolutely zero sense. What makes more sense is that someone has their hands on a 3D printer and spare time at work. These cases look almost identical to the mockups we’ve seen on This Is My Next (or The Verge), and that makes this a little bit suspect if you ask us. We would be absolutely mind-numbingly astounded if Apple was telling case makers what the iPhone 5 will look like before a launch.
This makes absolutely zero sense to us.
