Rumor: Apple holding hardware updates until Lion ships

Sometimes rumors make too much sense to pass up, and this is one of those. Apparently Apple’s holding on to new hardware until Lion ships because the company is so pumped about Lion that they want to make sure that people are getting the latest and greatest OS X right from the start, instead of forcing them to upgrade from Snow Leopard.

According to reports from MacRumors and AppleInsider, Apple has new Thunderbolt and Sandy Bridge MacBook Airs ready to ship, as well as new Thunderbolt equipped Cinema Displays.

For the record, anyone purchasing a Mac between now and the shipping of Lion will get a free upgrade to Lion. But, like we said off the top, this makes way too much sense for it not to be true.

The smartest thing Apple can do is hold off on shipping new Macs until Lion is ready and available to be imaged onto the new machines. Some of the users may be savvy enough to know that they can upgrade to Lion, but I’d be willing to bet a lot more of them may not pull the trigger, and instead, will stick with Snow Leopard.
