Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP released for iPad

Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP may be a game you’ve never heard of, but there has been a lot of buzz about it in the run up to today’s iPad-only release. To put it simply, the game is an 8-bit styled retro action adventure, built around a compelling soundtrack by composer Jim Guthrie. Players can casually explore a fantasy world, solving mysteries and getting into the odd brawl.

Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP was built exclusively for “Apple’s touchtronic machinery” as it’s described on the games’s website. The game was developed in Toronto, Canada, with the backing of independent game studio, Capy, and will also be coming to the iPhone and iPod touch in April 2011.

I haven’t played this yet, but it looks like a ton of fun, especially for fans of the original Zelda and similar titles from the early days of gaming. I’ll be buying a first-gen iPad in a couple of weeks, and I’ve often been thinking about what apps I’m going to want to buy. After checking out the gameplay footage, this will be the only app on my shopping list for the first few days. It looks stunning, and I fear I’ll spend many hours that I’m supposed to be using to write for this site playing it.
