The moment an official CDMA phone was released from Apple we suspected that we would start to hear rumblings of the phone being released in markets like India and China. It turns out that our suspicions were right. Less than 24 hours after the Verizon announcement, Morgan Stanley analysts were already telling people they were “hopeful” that the phone would make its way to India and China.
Now’s the time to shake your head in bewilderment.
We’re constantly trying to avoid the “analyst” stories, but considering the large number of CDMA-based customers in India and China, I thought it would be appropriate to take a moment and think about the implications that this potential move could have on the market. In India alone, 20 percent of their 670 million mobile users are stuck on a CDMA network (134 million). India is the second fastest growing mobile market in the world right now. That’s a lot of potential coin for Apple’s war chest.
Apple should learn from the Verizon experience and get their CDMA iPhone 4s into as many CDMA carriers’ hands as they can. Ditto for the rumored CDMA iPad should that rumor also turn out to be real.
