We could see a Gears of War on iOS “in 2 years”

If you watched Apple’s September Event, you would have seen the demo for an exciting new iPhone game that we know now as Infinity Blade. Based on the Unreal Engine, developed by Epic subsidiary Chair Entertainment, the game features incredible graphics, player vs. player fighting, and big boss monsters. It looks amazing. Recently, Eurogamer sat down with the creative director of Chair, Donald Mustard, to get his thoughts on developing for the iPhone.

He admitted he was skeptical at first. “I didn’t take it that seriously until we started making this game,” he said. “Now I’m like, ‘Oh my goodness, this is literally going to be the best looking handheld game ever made’. It’s way beyond what a DS or PSP could do. I think it’s going to be an interesting future, especially if in two years we can really run Gears of War on an iPhone.”

Projecting forward, given the rate at which processor speeds are increasing in the iPhone, Mustard said that “if the current trends stay true, these devices are going to be just as powerful as the Xbox 360. We’ll have a truly powerful console just sitting in all of our pockets. If that’s the case, there’s going be a lot more high-end games on the iPhone.”

He also revealed that there has been huge interest in licensing the Unreal Engine from other developers since the Epic Citadel tech demo was released in September. In it, you are able to walk through one of the castle designs and see firsthand what the Unreal Engine is capable of.

While I’m all for the advancement of gaming on the iPhone, it remains to be seen whether gamers want to play for long periods of time on a small handheld device. Mustard envisions a future where you may be able to play a game on a mobile device, get home, press pause and connect it to your television, and continue the game from there. We would literally have a gaming console in our pockets. Sounds awesome.
