Twitter buys up Tweetie

While you were out partying it up last night Twitter acquired everyone’s favourite Twitter application for the iPhone. Tweetie 2 for the iPhone is now the property of Twitter. Atebits sold the application, and Loren Brichter is now working for Twitter. Tweetie will be rebranded as Twitter for iPhone, and the application will go from 2.99 to free.

What’s this mean for other versions of the application? Evan Williams announced that Loren Brichter, the creator of Tweetie, will be working to bring a version of the application to the iPad in the near future.

There’s no mention of what’s going to happen with the desktop version and some users have been getting antsy about version two for the desktop. There’s also no mention on whether or not Twitter has bought the rights to the desktop application, or if Atebits will continue developing it.

Either way, we’re happy that Twitter bought up Tweetie, and we’re even more happy that they’re going to be releasing the application for free.  A huge congrats goes out to Atebits.
