I've seen the future of iOS and OS X, and it starts with iLife
In a recent well-thought out article about the iOS-ification of OS X, Frederico Viticci states, "This transition obviously started years ago, and in retrospect it’s hard to dig up the very first example of iOS-ification on the Mac." The fingerprints of iOS encroaching on OS X may be more tangible than realized. As I've watched Apple — in particular its video offerings — over the years, it occured to me sometime last year that if you want to know where Apple is taking OS X with regard to iOS, ... more

The naked truth about Final Cut Pro 10.0.3, and where it stands today
Let's face it — if you walked out of your house naked with much fanfare, then later, after many complaints by your neighbors, stepped out of your house wearing a really nice suit, you'd never be commended for your "marvelous fashion sense after all". You're always gonna be "that naked lunatic". This is unfortunately where Final Cut Pro X finds itself today. Here's another great simile from cinematographer Chris Marino: "...with CS6 on the horizon and MC6 making strides, fcpx is like the ex girlfriend trying to get back together ... more

Avid Studio for iPad smokes iMovie for iOS
Thursday, film and video post-production software company Avid released Avid Studio for iPad. Currently available for $4.99 (introductory price, soon to be $7.99), it's a clear competitor to Apple's iMovie for iOS (which is also available on iPhone). This mimics Avid's "big boy" competition in the world of fully-fledged professional post software on the desktop. Since the release of FCPX, many editors have gone back to their Avid roots with programs like Avid's Media Composer. The goal here is clear: show existing Apple customers how great Avid's products are, and hope ... more

Final Cut Pro X update provides bug fixes and (only) a little hope
Apple released an update to Final Cut Pro X (10.0.2) today, fixing a few bugs while simultaneously making a bit of an indirect statement about the present and future of Final Cut Pro as an editing platform. The Final Cut Pro X update The 10.0.2 resolves the following: Fixes an issue where a title may revert to the default font after restarting Final Cut Pro X Resolves an issue that could cause files recorded with certain third-party mobile devices to play back incorrectly Addresses a stability issue caused by changing the start time on ... more

Automatic Duck now free — FCP X tossed a bone, but not saved
Automatic Duck used to be a pro-level, pro-priced utility software that gave filmmakers and videographers the ability to export timelines from one editing platform to another. It is still all the things it once was... except expensive. Automatic Duck is now free. Automatic Duck nixes price (and support) The following is excerpted from a thank you by co-founder Wes Plate on the Automatic Duck, Inc. webpage: [quote]Because we are so busy with these new projects we cannot provide the same level of support for our plug-ins that we used to, therefore we can't ... more

Major Final Cut Pro X update released, Pro possibly now justified
When Apple announced Final Cut Pro X, the world was on edge. Users couldn't wait to get their hands on it and all of the teaser trailers for it looked amazing. Sadly though, the actual release was seen as a disappointment and droves of users demanded refunds. Apple has taken a step back in recent weeks, offering FCP7 back up for sale to appease the professional crowd that was so unhappy. There is no data on how many refunds were actually requested and supplied, but the press had a field ... more

Conan sticks it to Final Cut Pro X on-air
Sure, Final Cut Pro X can be seen as revolutionary, a step forward into the digital age, and as the embodiment of the next generation of video-editing, but people using those types of phrases seem to either be consumers, prosumerists, or journalists. Ask a video-editing professional their thoughts on the update, and you might very well be met with a lot of expletives, and confused looks. I'm not a video editor, so I'm not going to comment one way or the other, but you know who has video editors? Conan. ... more

Hints from industry veteran about the next Final Cut Pro include Thunderbolt and iPad support
At the PreNAB Editors' Lounge 2011, Mark Raudonis, head of post production at Bunim/Murray Productions, spoke briefly about what might be coming with the next version of Final Cut Pro. He coyly admitted that he had indeed been part of the select group of editors and video professionals who had been given a sneak peak at the latest version of FCP earlier this year. And officially, he was only allowed to say that "it was awesome." He did however, go on to speak about where Apple is headed with the next ... more

Apple's new Final Cut Pro to be "biggest overhaul since original 10 years ago"
Video editors concerned about the future of Apple's Final Cut Pro application can breath a little sigh of relief now. According to TechCrunch, not only is Apple still committed to updating the venerable video editing suite, but its next release will be a major upgrade. According to its sources, a small group of professional video editors was invited to Apple campus recently to check out the new version of Final Cut Pro and give their feedback. "Dramatic and ambitious," is how one tester described it. Another reported that the new ... more
