With the launch of the new iPad yesterday, Apple has officially revived the iSight brand.

Phil Schiller explains the rational:

Interestingly, that doesn’t just mean the iPad’s camera is an iSight, but the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S’s cameras have been retroactively been rebranded as iSight cameras on the Apple website.

Apple:

It would certainly be great if Apple would bring back a modern version of its once-popular stand-alone webcam called the iSight as well. MacBook and iMac users have cameras built-in, but Mac mini and Mac Pro users still don’t have a good webcam solution without having to buy Apple’s $1000 monitor. Maybe this revival of the name bodes well for a Thunderbolt camera! Then again, maybe Apple wants that $1000 for its display REALLY BAD.

If you get your news on the iPad then you’re probably well aware that there are pretty much an infinite number of news applications available to you. Flipboard, Reeder, and other RSS based applications that all do some things particularly well, but may not be for everyone. Personally I split my reading into two categories: work and home. Given that I write here on Macgasm full time, I need a no-fluff RSS reader that will keep me in the loop as fast as possible. That’s where Reeder comes in handy for me. But, when it’s time to pack it in and wrap up another work day and get some leisurely news reading done, I tend to head towards applications that look and feel much more like a traditional newspaper or magazine. This is where Early Edition 2 comes in handy for me.

This beautiful looking application lets users explore their news feeds without presenting your RSS information in the same typical email-esque fashion that most RSS applications do these days. There are a number of reasons you’d want to keep track of your time spent on a project or an article, although all of them seem to be for financial gain. We love financial gain, so we thought it might be appropriate to both fill you in on what Timecop does, as well as give away a copy of it so we can help people make some more money.

Timecop is a nifty little application that sits in your menubar and lets you track your time on multiple tasks as well as projects, making invoicing a lot simpler. Sure, applications like Billings does this as well (along with a lot of other stuff), but Timecop is only $4.99 on the Mac App Store, which is a lot cheaper than many of the alternatives.

Pretty simple stuff, but it’s also the stuff that helps you invoice just a little more accurately. Heck, you don’t even need to use it for invoicing. You could use it for tracking the time you spend on a school project, time you spend writing an article, or any other activity that you’re curious about. I was going to track the time I spend on Macgasm on a weekly basis, but man, I’m not sure if the app can even count that high.

Keeping track of your appointments and daily activities are hard enough as it is without a calendar. Inputting these events could be a lot easier, and in fact, it is easier with Fantastical.

Fantastical, reviewed by Susan back in September, has recently been updated to version 1.1, bringing with it iCloud syncing capabilities, as well as the ability to edit notes from directly within the application. Fantastical also now has CalDav support so you can work in Fantastical without having to run iCal simultaneously to sync your calendar information to you iPhone or iPad.

The application is $19.99 on the Mac App Store, and worthy every penny. But, we’ve teamed up with Fantastical to bring you a giveaway.

Have you ever given Finder a second thought? Well, I know I never have. It did what it had to do, no questions asked. Sure there were a few annoyances here and there but nothing to write home about. Or so I thought. That is until a friend of mine introduced me to the TotalFinder by BinaryAge. He told me it would change my Finder-world. And I can say that after having tried it for a little while, I am sold and there is no turning back.

On first look, everything looks just the same. If it weren’t for the slightly different icon, you wouldn’t even notice. And therein lies the very strength of TotalFinder. It is in fact a plugin for Finder. It uses Finder’s core architecture, graphic interface in such a way that there is no learning curve for the user. If you know how to use Finder, you automatically know how to use TotalFinder.

So what does this plugin bring to the table that would warrant jumping on the bandwagon? Here is a look at the main functions and features of this plugin.

Tabbed navigation

One of the biggest novelties in TotalFinder is the ability to use discrete tabs for each folder you open. Instead of opening a separate window for each folder you want to look at simultaneously, you can add as many tabs as you like (just like in Safari or Chrome), keeping your desktop clean and tidy. The usual shortcuts you use in your web browser are valid here, such that cmd+T opens up a new tab each time.

Dual mode

This is the single most awesome addition to Finder. Copying files between folders in Finder has always been a pain as you have to open two different windows and fight to keep them both up front (or at least I do, as it never seems to be straightforward for me). With TotalFinder, you simply have to activate the dual mode in the preferences menu or press cmd+U and your two active tabs are put side by side, making copying and moving files a real breeze. This also comes in handy if you want to check the contents of two folders to verify whether they match or not.

Visor

This function provides a system wide TotalFinder window that slides in and out of the screen at the touch of a button. If you are always busy and can’t bother scrolling all the way up to the Finder icon, simply double press the option button and a TotalFinder winder slides up just like magic. Press escape and it vanishes just as easily.

Folders on top

When I want to quickly look at the content of any given folder, I want to be able to quickly tell folders from files. However, Apple’s finder makes this hard as files and folders are indiscriminately sorted. With this function, you are able to see all your subfolders at once as they lie at the very top of the window, with files coming right after.

Cut and paste files

Just like it sounds, this function allows you to use the regular editing shortcuts to copy or move files and folders around. Simply select the files you want, press cmd+C or cmd+X to copy or cut, respectively, cmd+V allows you to paste them in your desired location.

System files

For those of you who need instant access to system files, TotalFinder provides an option that readily shows system files and folder in the window pane.

What’s Macgasmic?

Without a doubt, the dual mode is, alone, enough to make the plugin worthwhile. The other functions are just icing on the cake. Another big advantage of the plugin is that it is open source, leading to continuous improvement over time, ensuring a completely up to date program.

What’s Not?

This is a very simple add-on that works exactly as advertised, such that there are no negatives to report.

Word board games have always been a popular choice of game to play, and now the craze seems to have spread on to many iOS devices, the most popular games being Scrabble and Words With Friends.

Kalimat is a word game brought to you by Apps Arabia. It is a game based around the popular game Scrabble. If you have played Scrabble or Words With Friends, then you will certainly enjoy this game, and you will know how to play it. For those that don’t, it is easy to pick up.

The game play is almost the same as scrabble, each player is to take turns placing tile letters on the board spelling out a word. Once the word is created you earn points on how many tiles you have placed. Each tile has a score. Depending on where you place the word, you may earn additonal bonus points for placing tiles on a double or triple letter or double or triple word.

The player that starts the game needs to place the word at the starting point — one of the letters needs to be on the square that is in the centre. Any tiles that then follow must be joined to at least one tile that is already on the board. The word can be placed horizontally or vertically.

You start with 7 tiles and every time you use a tile to spell a word, you are given more from the stock of tiles still available. You then take turns until all the letters are used up. When the first player uses all of their tiles, the scores are then calculated and the person with the highest score wins. It is also possible the game will end another way. If you make three ‘no moves’ the game will end.

There are the usual options that you will have seen in Words With Friends where you can swap a tile or pass your turn. There is also an option to shake the device to shuffle your tiles up and see if you get some inspiration to find a good word.

What’s Macgasmic

To add a little something different to the game, you can play the normal version or the remix mode. This is where this separates itself from Scrabble and Words with Friends. You follow the same rules as in the normal mode, but there is a timer that counts down at the start of each turn. You score additional points for how quick you place a word. So if you place a word within one minute the word score is tripled. If it is within two minutes they are doubled. If it took you longer then the two minutes, well it’s tough luck you took too long and you don’t deserve any extra points!

The game is also supported with OpenFeint and Game Center. The more games you play, the more achievements you unlock and the higher up the leader board you will get. You can play your listed friends or a random player and there is also the option to pass and play. You can invite your friends on Facebook and Twitter quickly also.

What’s not?

While it is nice playing against your friends, it is fun to have the option to play with a random opponent. I tried this and at times it can take a while for someone to start playing with you. Obviously this isn’t the developer’s fault that a player is taking a while to play, but I think if more and more people played the game this would not be the case.

Conclusion

The game is great if you are looking for a change from the normal Scrabble and Words With Friends. There is even a lite version for you to try if you are still unsure whether it is your kind of game. Adobe Lightroom users will feel right at home in the Photosmith interface. It features 3 basic views: Grid, loupe (with thumbnails at the bottom), and fullscreen. You can sort and categorize all of your imported library images (Photosmith does not have access to your iTunes synced images folders) into collections, and then further rate them through the 5 star system or colours. While “Flagging” — picks & rejects — is available, it is currently unable to sync to Lightroom, so I essentially ignored it beyond using it as a means to narrow down my images on the iPad. Of course you can zoom in 100 percent (which looks much better than the native photo app) and swipe to browse the images in your import library.

Syncing

The process to sync is dead simple. First, aside from owning the Photosmith app, you’ll need to have downloaded and installed the plugin for Lightroom. Then, with Photosmith turned on, and your iPad attached to your computer by USB and your iPad connected to your wireless network (!!), you can hit the “sync” button at the top right of the Photosmith screen, and in Lightroom, check out “plugin extra’s” under the File Menu.

This app is a blessing for Lightroom users who like to travel light and streamline their workflow while on the road. You don’t need to wait until you get back home or to your office to import and see your final images. You can have your selects ready minutes after your shoot — you can even view them with your client on site.

What’s Macgasmic

Photosmith allows me to proof and rate images after a shoot and to sync those ratings to Lightroom so I can get straight to work on the key images that much faster. If I wanted, I could upload a gallery of images via USB to put in front of a client for review later (note to developers: now that I have it so good, I want to be able to IMPORT collections from Lightroom to Photosmith — though sadly I doubt iOS lets us do that). No complaits there, and the only issues I did find have little or nothing to do with the developers of this app — heck, they’re even teasing at potentially integrating develop tools in the future (YES PLEASE!).

What’s Not

The most commercially available method of transfering images to your iPad is Apple’s own Camera Connection kit, which supports SD & USB. While I have a USB cable for my camera, I prefer to transfer images through a card reader: of course my main camera bodies use CF cards so I have to go looking for other 3rd party peripherals that are sometimes tougher to get.

Another initial complaint I had with the native iPad photo app is that I could never tell what the titles of my photos were, which was a further hinderance in previewing proofs with a client. If you can’t uniquely identify a photograph that your client chose, it’s kind of useless. Thankfully Photosmith not only gives you access to the filename, but much of the core EXIF data for your peeping needs. You’re also able to enter Keyword data, Location and IPTC data on the spot. Although currently you can only do this one image at a time, the developers assured me that they are already working on updates that will allow you to save your own import information to make this process even smoother.

Final Thoughts

The app itself is reasonable for what it is, but possibly expensive by App store standards. At the time of this review, it is $17.99 — a bargain compared to most software photographers are used to buying. If you own an iPad and use Lightroom, there is no good reason not to own this app.

Camera Plus Pro is an iPhone photography application that lets you not only tag your photos, but also counteract your shaky hands, set timers on photos, and capture photos in burst mode. You also have access to fun filters.

It doesn’t end there though—the application also lets you capture videos and apply fun filters to your videos. Camera Plus Pro also lets you share your photos with Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, and Picasa, as well as YouTube.

Long story short, it’s a better camera application than the default camera app. Heck, you can even dump your entire photo library to an FTP server.  That doesn’t happen with many other applications.

Creavures is ethereal in tone, and exquisitely beautiful to look at in a dark and horrifying way. The color and vibrancy of the world could be taken directly from an Avatar set, glowing, vivid, mysterious. The Muse team has done an excellent job of transporting us to another world in CreaVures.

This platformer doesn’t end there though. You take control of multiple CreaVures throughout your voyage, and for the most part, you spend time controlling multiple creatures at one time. Each CreaVures has their own perks, but the constant ebb and flow from one creature to another is charming and well-designed. You eventually find yourself working in tandem – with yourself – in a self controlled co-op mode.  While this game in not available on iOS, you can get it from the Mac App Store.  Running it on both my Mac Pro (2008) and MacBook Pro (2009) worked hassle free. My Mac Pro struggled with the graphics a little bit when I boosted the game play settings to maximum, but for the most part, it was smooth sailing.

I can’t say enough about this game, but instead of telling you how awesome it is at this point, we’re just going to give away 5 copies right now.

Well, turns out there is, and I no longer need to jump from one application to another just to make sure that I’m not missing something, or some event that I should be attending. CalendarBar does exactly that, and it does it directly from your menu bar. Macgasm would love to help you see how you’re wasting your life. This may be the most depressing app I have, but I love it. Wasted Life lets you put in the number of hours you spend doing things, and it calculates how much of your life you will waste doing them.

This app is a really simple yet effective concept. Are you doing a daily commute? Do you always have to go to boring meetings? Do you wonder just how much time you spend on things that may not be all that important to you?

The app lets you add all those things that you do regularly, and actually, it might be a nice idea if on the support site or somewhere in the app they had suggestions of the types of activities you can add. Once you do type something in, you can see just how much of your entire life it consumes.

Of course the app does have the share feature, through Twitter and Facebook integration, but I won’t be using it — I don’t really want my friends and family to know just how much time I do spend tweeting.

There are also chart indicators if you touch the chunks of time to see what exactly is using your life up. There is a bit of science behind it all, taking into account things like the country you live in and life expectancy.

iTunes LPs and iTunes Extras don’t work on the new Apple TV. It’s a little bit surprising that we never noticed it around the office, considering the amount of time we have spent playing with the new Apple TV.

How annoying.

The iTunes features won’t be absent for very long if you believe the latest series of “Ask Steve” emails that have been circulating the internet this morning. iTunes Extras and LPs are “coming” to an Apple TV near you in the future, according to Steve Jobs himself. We’re starting to suspect that we might see a software update to the Apple TV pretty soon, possibly along side the iOS 4.2 release.

The iTunes LP format is Apple’s answer to dwindling music sales these days. The format attempts to bring back the excitement of exploring the artwork that accompanied the physical musical formats (CDs, Vinyl, etc) of our childhood. The iTunes Extras are similar in goal, but a little different, instead of replacing album artwork, they’re Apples answer to DVD Menus, and extra video content such as commentaries, and other video extras.

Both haven’t been as successful as many have hoped, but the labels are slowly bringing us content in these formats. Hopefully all music and video starts shipping with Extras and LP versions.

It’s not every day we have an opportunity to giveaway a movie on iTunes, so we thought we’d jump at the chance, given that Halloween is right around the corner.

So, this week we’re giving away The Exorcist: Director’s Extended Cut. If you’re not aware of what an iTunes Extra includes, you’re in luck. An iTunes Extra film includes a lot of bonus footage, much like the extras found on DVD and Blu-Ray discs these days. What’s Macgasmic?

Usually I don’t particularly care for developers using custom UIs just for the sake of being custom. But Droplr for iPhone is so incredibly gorgeous that it’s completely worth it. And to match the beautiful UI the app’s sounds are an absolute delight and make Droplr a joy to use

Droplr lets you access all the uploads from your Mac and also upload files directly from your iPhone. To upload something you simply select the “+” buttton on the top navigation bar and you can select an image from your library, shorten a link from the clipboard or compose a new note. It’s all very easy and quick. When you click on  ”drop” a new menu will appear on the bottom with these options: quicklook, copy link, email, send to Twitter and delete. You can also “pull to refresh” to update the app with your new uploads if you happen to add something from your Mac.

What’s not so good?

When you want to post a “drop” to Twitter you’re asked to select your client of choice. While there is a huge selection of clients to choose from if you happen to use a lesser known one you’re out of luck since there’s no other way to post to Twitter. It probably won’t be a problem for most people but I thought it was still worth mentioning.

I would also like some more organization (by folders, by type) instead of having all my “drops” in one big list. The current system is fine if you don’t have a lot of them but if you do and want to find something specific it might be a bit too much work.

How does it work?

When you first open the app, there’s a screen that briefly explains what you can do with Stylebook. Then you have the main screen where you can choose, from the buttons on the bottom, between Closet, Looks, Calendar, and More.

From the Closet, you can upload pics of your clothes and organize them in the different categories. You can add custom categories and edit the existing ones.

Looks is where you organise your clothes into outfits. Each outfit also goes into its own category (work, evening, formal, etc.). In addition to adding clothes/shoes/accessories to each outfit, you can also add an inspiration pic (explained below).

In the Calendar, you can add what you wore each day so you can make sure you’re not wearing the same outfits too often and you can also use it to plan your future wardrobes or what you’re going to wear to an upcoming special event.

There’s also an Inspiration tab where you can add pics (from fashion magazines, friends, etc) for you to get inspiration for your own outfits.

In the More tab, there are several tips explaining how to use the app and, most notably, how to better photograph your clothes and remove the background.

What’s Macgasmic?

When you create looks, you can pinch to make items bigger or smaller which is very helpful if you photographed your clothes from different distances. You can also layer them to get a better idea of how your outfit is going to look.

The included automatic background remover isn’t perfect, but Stylebook gives you plenty of tips on how to photograph your clothes, what color backgrounds to use to make everything smoother and there’s even a manual edit mode to fix what the background remover couldn’t.

What needs work?

Currently, you have to edit out the background of each pic as soon as you upload it. There’s no option to save it so that you can edit it later. It would be better if you could photograph a bunch of clothes at once and edit them all later. This limitation is also a problem if you make a mistake while removing the background. That is to say, there’s no going back after saving the pic.

Another thing that needs work is adding clothes to outfits: you can only select one item at a time which can be time consuming if you have a look with lots of layers and accessories.

As a girl who always packs too much, I would also love a packing list feature. That way I could try to optimise my packing by trying to pack items that could be used in different outfits.

It might seem like it’s too much work to photograph and upload all your clothes. If you do manage that, Stylebook can be an amazing tool. You can use it while shopping to see how something would look with your clothes back home. You can use it to plan your outfits for the week to avoid those “I have nothing to wear” mornings. If you’re lucky enough to have more clothes than you can keep track of, it’s very useful to help you find what you’re looking for.

What’s Macgasmic

No longer having to open up a Twitter application, wait for it to load all your tweets, then navigate to your direct messages, wait some more for those messages to update, and then replying to a message doesn’t have to happen any more. You can just access your direct messages directly, reply, and then carry on with your day.

DMs only loads your direct messages from Twitter. You can also create groups of contacts so that you can quickly navigate between different groups of people. For instance, I have a Macgasm group set up with all of our writers, a family group and a friends group, this helps me prioritize what direct messages I need to interact with, and when. As much as I love all of my followers on Twitter, some things take a precedent over others. A real life friend telling me he’s at a coffee shop down the road is a little more time-sensitive to me than someone requesting an app review.

DMs is a great way to help categorize your direct messages into more manageable chunk.

DMs also splits your tweeter contacts into two groups, Friends, and All Friends. The Friends grouping is made up of people you’ve sent or received direct messages from, whereas the All Friends list is everyone who follows you. So, if you’re having a hard time finding a friend when you’re trying to add a person to a group, make sure you’re looking in the “All Friends” section. It took us a while to figure out what the difference was between the two groups.

You can also mark all as read, delete specific direct messages one by one, or all at once, which is pretty handy.

Threaded Messages are also present in DMs, which is also a huge time saver. I can’t even begin to put a number on the amount of times I’ve had to go back in time and try to figure out what a direct message was referencing. Just click on the message, and you’ll see a thread that looks similar to a traditional iChat conversation. This section is probably the most useful part of the application, from here you can see a tweeters profile, star a direct message for future reference, create a note for a particular user, or add them to a group, and obviously, also reply to the message.

What needs polish

The 3G iPhone doesn’t seem to play all that nicely with DMs. The application did crash occasionally for me, but to be fair, everything has been a little more crashy with the introduction of iOS 4.0+. It might not be a problem for most, but I thought I should point it out, just in case. The developer, Shaun Austin, has assured us that he’s spent a lot of time and effort trying to optimize the application for the 3G iPhone. So, if you’re stuck with a 3G device, you haven’t been abandoned.

Final Thoughts

DMs is a great concept, and even better, it actually delivers on what’s advertised. While my 3G phone managed to crash a couple of times, we’ve heard from some others that the 3GS and iPhone 4 version works like a charm. DMs, and other applications in this genre are trying to redefine how we communicate digitally, and if they manage to catch on, we could see it become much more efficient than email and other mediums.

Keeping in mind that DMs is in its early stages, and that they’re working very hard on trying to ensure that running DMs on a 3G iPhone remains a viable option, we have no problem overlooking some of the smaller things that seem out of place. There’s a lot that this application does well, and it could be a brief look at the future of small message transmissions over the internet.

What’s Macgasmic?

When you open Movie Vault, you’re presented with beautiful wooden shelves where the movies are displayed. When you click on one you get a pane with all the details about the movie including descriptions, actors, director, etc. All this information is fully-searchable so that each movie is just one quick search away.

To switch genre you can swipe the shelves left or right. There’s also a button on the top left corner to choose the genre you want. You can pick from Horrror, Drama, Musicals, Westerns, Comedy, and several more. Here you also have have a search button in case you’re looking for something more specific. To be honest, I felt the search button was somewhat hidden. I think it should be more obvious that this is where it is located.

In addition to the over 1200 movies currently available in Movie Vault, more movies are added all the time. Even better than that is that you don’t even need an update to get them. They will automatically appear in the app when they’re added to its database. On the top right corner there’s also a reload button in case you want to check if anything new has just been added.

What else I would like

Currently you can only display the movies by genre. I would like an option to display all the available movies and to be able to organize them by date, name, etc. to make everything easier to find. Also at this point there’s no way to mark or save the movies you want to see, so if there are a few of them you’re interested in, you have to search again when you’re ready to watch them. Another thing that would be nice is live searching, so that movies matching my criteria will appear as soon as I start typing. This might seem like a tiny detail, but what can I say? iOS has got me spoiled.

For the most part Movie Vault works extremely well. It’s very smooth and it looks amazing. The movies start playing almost instantaneously, as long as you have a fast connection, and the quality is ok considering most of these movies never came out on DVD. I’ve had the random crash, but I was told a fix is on the way.

Most of the features I’m wishing for are already planned, so I’m looking forward to future updates since this app promises to only get better and better.

There’s a lot to love about it, and there’s a couple of suggestions we have for them as well, so here we go!

What’s Macgasmic:

Google Reader

In today’s world of RSS and up to the minute news updates, having access to a good RSS reader is paramount. While a number of other services have come and gone, it seems like Google Reader has become the defacto RSS aggregator for a lot of people. Google lets you connect to their service and import your feeds to an application that supports their service.

The benefit is that you can sync your RSS feeds across multiple applications, devices, and browsers, giving you the ability to jump between applications without having to waste an entire weekend importing your feeds. It also stops you from having to read through duplicate news, it’s bad enough that we’re in an echo chamber already, so having two or sometimes three copies of the same articles in your reader can be avoided, thank God.

FLUD News lets you connect to your Google Reader account so that you can immediately get your feeds up and running without configuring them one by one. I can’t recommend any service that doesn’t have Google Reader support these days, so it’s a huge positive that FLUD News has given us the option.

In App Video

Video on the web is huge, obviously, but up until now YouTube integration on iOS has been a little suspect. I don’t particularly like being shunted to the official YouTube application every single time I want to watch one of their videos on my iPhone or iPad. FLUD News lets you watch the videos right in the articles. It’s handy, and saves time. You can get your content immediately without having to wait to load the video in another app. It’s another huge positive for the application.

Social Features

I love having access to social media features directly in my RSS readers of choice. It’s another must these days, and it’s good to see that FLUD News also gives you access to this kind of functionality, a quick click and you can love it, ship off an email with a link to the article, share it on Facebook, or tweet it to your followers on Twitter. If you’re a news junkie there’s probably a high likelihood that the people to associate with are as well. Being able to send off links to things you find important will help you share your interests a lot easier than some of the other applications for iOS.

What could use some polish:

De-Pulsify

FLUD News has been getting some criticisms over the last week about their originality, and their similar look and feel to Pulse. While there’s obvious similarities, I’d argue that FLUD News actually takes their concept one step further, and incorporates a much tidier experience. For instance, FLUD News has clearly defined categories at the top of their application, whereas Pulse does not. They also provide a better article page, complete with tools for sharing and loving the content you’re reading.

I’d recommend trying this application out for yourself and coming to a conclusion on your own. We see the similarities, but we also see a lot of differences between the two apps. Think of it like Twitter applications, there’s only so many ways someone can display a tweet. FLUD News took the Pulse model and ran with it, and I think they did an admirable job pushing the boundaries of the model.

That being said, there’s a lot to gain by pushing themselves beyond the “Pulse” layout that they’ve built their great application around. Differentiating themselves even further from Pulse would be the most beneficial thing they could do to their app.

I want an application that can go out and grab my PDFs from Dropbox, iDisk, or even the Web. This is where Folio comes in handy, you can access all three of those sources without having to plug your iPad or iPhone into iTunes. Apple’s rumoured to be working on over the air syncing, and when that day comes I might change my mind, but until then, Folio’s become my primary PDF reader on my iPad.  The application is 4.99 on the App Store and worth every single penny, especially if you spend a lot of time reading PDFs

What’s Macgasmic

To start it’s a universal app. That means that you buy the application once, and you can use it on both your iPhone and iPad. You don’t have to buy an application for both medium, which is great.

The UI is gorgeous, and lets you scroll from left to right through your entire PDF library. You click on the PDF cover and you’re immediately taken into the PDF in either a one page view or two page view depending on if you’re in landscape or portrait mode on your iPad. it’s really handy, and the extra screen real-estate of the iPad shines in Folio.

PDFs are interactive, you can obviously swipe from page to page, but you can also click on links to jump to other pages in the documents, or on weblinks which will open up an internal web browser so you can check out a link, then jump back into your PDF. It’s huge if you’re into PDF magazines like BeatWeek.

You can also bookmark your pages, change the brightness of your device, and toy with a display mode that includes different default colour schemes for your PDFs.

The really great thing about this app is the Dropbox support. I house all of the Macgasm files that I share with our writing team in Dropbox, so being able to access those PDFs directly from within Folio really set this application apart for me. I was immediately able to input my Dropbox info, download my PDFs, and run out the door to a meeting with potential advertisers, no sync required.

The Folio team is working on including syncing features between the iPhone and iPad app in the upcoming version, so keep your eyes peeled for that.

What needs work

The UI, while looking good, could be more functional by letting you switch to a view that lets you see more PDFs at once, permanently. This view is present on the iPhone, but it’s missing in the iPad version. The iPad version does let you click on a magnifying glass to see a listing of all your PDFs temporarily, so the functionality isn’t missing entirely, but being able to adopt the view permanently would be a nice little touch.

Importing from Dropbox literally takes a copy of the PDF on the server and downloads it to your device. If there’s a change to the file on Dropbox’s servers, it won’t automatically get pushed to your device. Instead, you have to delete your current version, and then re-download the new one. It’d be nice if Folio would keep synced with the changes automatically.  They’ve apparently received a lot of requests for this feature, and I’ve been assured that they’re working on it, and that it’ll make an appearance in a future version.

Last year, I started using my iPhone to write about my European trip. I even wrote a Macgasm post on it. It fixed my issues with traditional paper journals, but it was still a bit cramped for writing more than short notes. Then came the iPad.

To start

Chronicle for iPad is a beautiful and elegant journaling app. It allows you to easily write down your thoughts and ideas in an interface that makes it simple to keep your writing organized. There’s a built-in search feature that lets you quickly look for a particular keyword or phrase and you can browse for entries by month in addition to the list on the left panel.

One of the things I really appreciate in Chronicle is all the export features. While all the data in all your iOS apps is backed up whenever you connect your iDevice to iTunes, if you need to do a fresh restore, all that data is lost. With Chronicle, you can upload your journal to Google Docs, export them as a website or email your entries. Ideally, I’d also like the option to upload my content to Dropbox or MobileMe.

Chronicle also comes with a few nice options to customize your journal to your liking. You can choose between several fonts for your text, make it bigger or smaller and also pick a darker or lighter font. You can also change the background color, and annotate your entries with several cute icons to indicate your mood or to make an entry stand out.

You can also add pictures from your library, it’s very easy to do (although the icon could be more obvious) and you can resize, rotate and slide them wherever you want. The only thing I feel could be better is having the text wrap around the pictures.

What’s missing?

There are two main things I would like to see in this app. The biggest one is some type of sync with the iPhone version. While I primarily use the iPad app, the ability to add quick notes on the iPhone while I’m waiting in line or simply because it’s quicker than taking the iPad out of my purse, (specially since my iPhone is permanently glued to my hand) and have them automatically sync with the iPad would be ideal.

Another feature I would like is some sort of geo tagging. I love to write my thoughts and adventures while traveling, and an option to automatically add a location to my posts, next to the date, or even a map would be very welcome. If this feature is added the ability to search entries by location will be a must as well.

Overall Chronicle is a great app that I can see getting better and better. At $1.99 in the App Store it’s a steal if you’re into journaling or even if you just want something to write down random thoughts.

You really should try some of these other ones out.

Their newest instalment, Aqueduct, is probably their best one to date. Available on the AppStore today, Aqueduct is literally a game about aqueducts. You have to create a sewer system so that the water flows from one point to another. Along the way you encounter obstacles that make going from point A. to point B a little more difficult. You start with a series of tubes that fit together, and you have to optimize the best way to place them together to reach your endpoint.

It’s really straightforward, but it makes you think.  There were a number of levels that had me scratching my head trying to figure out the best way to complete the puzzle.

The image below demonstrates the steps that I took to complete a level. The top left image is how we started off the the puzzle.  The bottom left it how I arranged the tiles to complete my pipeline, and the biggest image is the completed puzzle.

The Review

The Joule iPad stand is a gorgeous metal stand.  Made of solid aluminum, it sports a shiny chrome surface ($129), or, if you prefer, a black matte finish ($139).  If you choose the matte finish, you can have your stand engraved with your name or a logo.

Inside the package are the base, the foot, and a carrying case.  You’ll definitely want to keep the stand in its carrying case when it’s not in use, especially if you stick it in a bag with your iPad.  The stand is so heavy you won’t want it bouncing around and coming in contact with your precious gizmo.  While there’s no instruction booklet included, the cardboard label has a photograph that demonstrates the stand’s three positions, and it’s pretty obvious how the Joule works.

The base has a velvet-lined interior that protects your iPad from scratches. On the underside are two rubber feet that keep the base from slipping.

You can insert the iPad either horizontally or vertically into the stand.  When the iPad is vertical, the power button is accessible through the curved opening in the stand.  There is also a cutout that allows sound to come out the iPad’s speakers.  Unfortunately, in the vertical position you can’t insert the iPad’s dock connector, so you can’t use the stand and charge the iPad at the same time.  In the landscape position, all the controls are easily accessible and you can plug the iPad in.

The stand offers three viewing positions.

What’s Macgasmic:  The Joule iPad stand is simply gorgeous.  It’s solid and holds the iPad securely in both vertical and horizontal positions.  The stand is perfect for viewing videos, displaying on a desk, or typing with an external keyboard.

What’s Not:  First, the stand only works with a bare naked iPad.  The opening will not accommodate even the most form-fitting case (though skins should be fine).  For example, my husband has the Griffin FlexGrip case, which is a pretty minimalist case, and his iPad wouldn’t fit in the Joule.  So, in order to use the Joule, you’ll either need to forego a case or remove your iPad from its case each time.

Second, I was hoping that, on the lowest setting, the Joule would angle the iPad correctly for typing.  Unfortunately, the angle is too sharp, forcing your hands upward into an uncomfortable position.  Within just a few minutes, my hands and wrists were aching. Of course, if you use an external keyboard with your iPad, this will not be an issue.

Third, obviously $129 is pretty expensive for a stand.  If you shot your wad buying your iPad, you might prefer going to your local office supply and purchasing a $3.00 business card holder.  If, however, you desire something both beautiful and extraordinarily well made, the Joule is well worth the price. It is more than just an iPad stand, it is a work of modern art.

The Joule is an elegant, sturdy stand that complements the clean lines and aesthetics of your iPad. It offers three different viewing angles and the option of portrait or landscape orientation.  It can display your iPad on your desk while you work, on your kitchen counter while you prepare dinner, or on your coffee table while you watch a movie.  The only task you can’t do well with the Joule is type directly on your iPad.

Shisen-sho Mahjong Solitaire ($3.99) brings that old experience back to me in a great easy-to-touch format with subtle but harmonious sound effects. In Shisen-sho, you have to unite two pieces that do not have obstructed paths. Two adjacent pieces are always fair game, but you will have to connect other pieces if and only if they can be connected by a maximum of three lines. Confusing? It gets easier to understand once you start playing (and keep reading, since a giveaway will be in progress).

I really like this game, but I have a few recommendations and suggestions based on my past experience as a Shishen-sho addict on another platform. First, vary the game board. I’d think using other characters (not just standard Mahjong-style tiles) would be more interesting, especially since foreigners like me think a lot of the characters on the game board look the same. Another option is to give timed features to all sized-games (you can play with a large game, as seen above, a medium game board, or a small one). I’d prefer an even larger game board if possible — I can defeat the large version rather quickly; I remember playing 20 minute games with my hearty Palm III (though that was on the longer side; some games were completed in less than 3 minutes but that was only after a mad dash to beat my friend who was competing against me). I’d also prefer to have timed games on all levels, not just with a specific sized board.

But — despite these shortcomings which can be easily addressed, I love this game and am so happy to see that I can still experience the game with newer technology. And now I have the opportunity to share that with you.

You do these things by touching certain items on the screen and interacting with them. You can move a painting, admire yourself in a mirror, open a drawer, or swallow a pill, among hundreds of other possibilities. Therefore, this game doesn’t get too boring, though there’s frustration to be had if you can’t figure out what the next possible step is.

You’ll absolutely need to familiarize yourself with the controls before you start the game — it’s impossible to know what to do if not (though you could try!) But once you’re in, you’re in.

This game is only “episode 1,” and if you know all the next moves, it can feel rather short. That’s probably why there’s a seemingly unlimited number of actions you can perform on the items in every room you go into — so that the gameplay doesn’t seem to end that quickly. Hey, they’re doing it right.

Overall, the game does deliver a lot of interesting possibilities as I see how Louis interacts with the items in his surroundings. My one problem was that the iPod didn’t always react to the touch — I’d be putting my finger zoomed-in on the soap and get the towel behind me. The proper aim is crucial.

While there’s no plot to the game, it’s still a fun one to play — it’s unparalleled to anything else I’ve seen on the iPhone, that’s for sure, and kind of reminds me a little of GTA4.

Believe it or not, it’s a lot harder than it seems. In Touch Physics, you must play against the clock — that is, those shapes you draw move too. And if you draw too many, you will go over quota and will have to work at it again.

Touch Physics is extremely enjoyable and definitely is one of those games that will provide hours of entertainment. If you like games that utilize the laws of physics, and you like to be consistently challenged, you’ll love Touch Physics.

And now it’s on the iPod too.

The object of SET is to find consistent patterns in the cards presented. The patterns need to be either unique (for example, three different colors/shapes/shadings) or all the same (three cards only of one diamond but all in different colors). Wikipedia explains it best:

Several games can be played with these cards, all involving the concept of a set. A set consists of three cards which satisfy all of these conditions:

• They all have the same number, or they have three different numbers.
• They all have the same symbol, or they have three different symbols.
• They all have the same shading, or they have three different shadings.
• They all have the same color, or they have three different colors.

In other words, if you like pinpointing patterns and spotting anomalies or similarities and love card games that can be played alone or with others, you’ll love SET.

And true to its name, Pockent’s version of SET (iTunes link, $2.99) is just like the real thing with four different game flavors and two different levels.

In the Classic game, which can be played quickly, you are supposed to find 10 SETs in the least amount of time. In Puzzle mode, you are supposed to find all possible combinations of SETs in the least possible time. The cards, in this mode, do not change once you find a set.

There’s also a Timed mode where you are tasked with finding as many SETs as you can in a 2 minute period. It’s not as easy as it seems and you’ll find that time flying by pretty quickly.

Finally, Arcade mode is for those who want to play a longer game. You need to find as many SETs as possible before time runs out. You can continue advancing as you get more and more SETs and more time gets added. This is my favorite SET mode.

The two levels are Basic and Advanced. The former only has three different colors, but the latter introduces shading, adding an additional advanced element to keep you on your toes when you get good at the Basic level.

So what do I think? I love the game — I always have. I remember, however, playing a similar game called Grouper on the PalmOS back in the day. One of the most addictive elements of Grouper was a “hint” feature where you actually see how many possible SETs you can create in a possible turn. I was shocked to find that there were occasionally about 10 possible SETs that I was able to create on a single board! It merely displayed the number (“10 SETs found”), but it was fun to know this, especially when you’re stuck on one of the harder turns. It’d be great to have such a feature where I can see the multiple possibilities of SETs on a single game board in all modes (except Puzzle, where this feature is already present).

I also got pretty immersed in the Arcade mode. The one catch: eventually I had to stop playing. There’s no ability to save the game right now, so despite playing for a long time, I had to stop abruptly and my progress was lost. A “save” feature would be great.

Overall, the game is great. I think that there are some things needing some small changes (cosmetically, the menus make the game seem more appropriate for young children despite it being an appropriate game for children of all ages), but aesthetics aside, SET for the iPhone is a keeper.

BoXiKoN is one of those games that you can play anyplace and anytime. The game goes by relatively quickly, so you can play it just about anywhere, and you might feel after the fact that you need to get your BoXiKoN fix. It’s a pleasant game with great graphics and can be played by kids of all ages.

But I don’t really want to sound ridiculous when I’m singing. And hey, do you? Don’t you want to know what you’re singing so you don’t fudge those words? Lyrical Premium (iTunes link, $0.99) is able to do make it easier for you to look like a brilliant singer who has a terrific memory. Using your iPhone’s connection or wifi, Lyrical pulls song lyrics from LyricWiki.org and displays them on your screen:

There have been times when I’ve caught myself in a song not knowing what to sing next. I’ve been using my Treo instead, and with Google’s help, finding those words. Lyrical is a GREAT alternative. Fortunately, there’s also a free version in case you want to see how incredibly powerful the app is before you take the plunge and buy it.

While incredibly powerful as a lyrics engine, there’s room for improvement. As an example, Lyrical has offline browsing for songs you have played, which is especially helpful for those of us who have iPod touches and don’t have unlimited wifi. I especially will appreciate that when I’m stuck smack in the middle of the Delaware Water Gap on that long car ride! But it would be incredibly awesome for Lyrical to traverse through your entire music library and grab all the song lyrics when you are online (by request, I suppose), instead of having to manually play each song to grab the lyrics. To that end, I’d be curious to know what would happen if the ID3 tags were modified after the lyrics were pulled. Are the lyrics tied to an ID3 tag or are they stored separately?

Further, it would also be great to make Lyrical a standalone MP3 player that operates like the iPhone/iPod touch music app. In a way, this already is possible — you can play a song from Lyrical and it will pull the lyrics for you. However, when the song stops playing, it’s over. I happen to prefer shuffling my music and listening to more, and if I’m in Lyrical and start the music, I don’t want it to end after the song is done. It seems that the only way I can get my music continuously is to start the Music app on the iPod first, which is not incredibly intuitive. Still, though, that’s the way to get the music playing forever — and I’m currently leaving it running to get as many lyrics to as many songs as possible. With the number of songs in my library, this will take about a week.

I love Lyrical and hope that there’s more to come from here. If music is your thing, and singing empowers you, get Lyrical. You won’t be disappointed.

I purchased the AirCurve by Griffin just a few weeks after it was released. I had no clue what to even think of it. How would it improve my speaker on my iPhone? I have been pleasantly surprised, though. Now this isn’t going to give you amazing sound out of your speaker of your iPhone, but what it does do is amplify your speaker. What you get is a two-piece acrylic block that has a canal through it. The canal starts where your iPhone sits and gradually gets larger, amplifying the sound as it goes. This is one of the few things that I own two of and keep on on my desk at all times. You can run your sync cable into the AirCurve and connect it to your iPhone so you can listen to Podcasts and Audiobooks without draining your power. I have several Macs and only keep my iTunes items on one. I am not always around my iMac, so the AirCurve goes many places with me. Great for travel, and eliminates having to use your earbuds with you are just chilling in your hotel room wanting to listen to music or whatever. But remember, this isn’t going to make your iPhone sound better. If it did, this would be the Jesus product to go with the Jesus phone.

I have had the pleasure of having a Griffin Clarifi since it came out, and it is by far my favorite iPhone case. It is also the only case that I have on my iPhone 99% of the time. It only comes off when I am traveling and I need to use my Incase Power Slider. The Clarifi is made of polycarbonate and has a lens that slides over your iPhones built in camera. This lens is really the show stealer of this case though. The lens is designed to help enhance your iPhones camera. Making images clearer and more sharp. The case was designed to work with apps like Evernote and Barcode scanning applications. Of course I got it because of Evernote. The design of the Clarifi is nice and thin, it adds very limited bulk to your iPhone and you probably wont even notice it is on there. The lens comes in handy when you want to snap a picture of a business card are a receipt. You will get a nice clear image, which is near impossible with the unenhanced built in camera. The case also offers great protection of the iPhone and allows full access to all your controls and ports. If you have a charging dock, the bottom of the clarifi will come off so you can cradle the iPhone with out removing the whole case. This to me is the most essential iPhone case made to date. It is nice and stylish while also providing great functionality and usability.

Update: Our very own Jason Hamilton pointed out on Twitter that the clarifi works well with the 3G S phone and its macro capabilities.
