This software is an upgrade from what used to be FixTunes from Cloudbrain which never worked for me other than causing me more headaches. Although this iteration has a more user friendly GUI I haven't had much better luck with it. It promises to "fix" songs, find duplicates, missing album art, etc. by connecting to the TidySongs server and comparing your itunes library with their database. It only works within itunes and downloads and installs AdobeAir also. Agreeably, my itunes library was a true test for it as it was a mess... duplicates, partial names, limited album art, etc. I had to run the scan of my itunes library numerous times because it kept dropping the connection to their server.... not necessarily their fault. And if you don't have a moderately decent fast connection (I didn't) you have to manually set tidysongs to give each song an appropriate length of time to find the missing info on the server. I had to set mine at 10+ seconds, the downside of this is if it finds the info more quickly you still have to wait for the software to countdown from 10 to zero before it tries the next song. I have over 9,000 songs so... hmmm.... let's do the math... over 24 hr's of solid scan time to get through my itunes library. All the time using significant PC resources as both TidySongs and itunes are hogging CPU & memory. Well, if it worked as promised, I could live with that. But the truth is that I have ended up with a worse mess after several attempts. TidySongs creates a couple of playlists within itunes, one called 'songs fixed with tidysongs', and another called 'skipped songs'... songs it can't figure out what to do with so it ignores them altogether. The number of songs that TidySongs says that it fixed or skipped is considerablly more than what ends up in the 'fixed and/or skipped' playlists so I'm left wondering if it really fixed anything to begin with. And every time I had to relaunch because of a server disconnection it would double the number of songs in my itunes library (don't ask me how or why)and would start from square one again, ignoring the fact that I had un-checked the "include previously fixed or skipped songs" checkbox. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the software to reset the count to zero and start fresh but obviously something in the registry needs deleted to do that because it installed with all the aberrant numbers once again. I ran a scan for duplicates and TidySongs found 28 duplicates in 9,000+ songs in my library....many, many times less than itunes itself found. When I clicked on the 'help' tab within TidySongs all I got was an email address to Kelly@TidySongs.... no online support whatsoever. I emailed Kelly and got quick (no weekend support) response to a couple of my initial simple questions. I'm still waiting for answers to the more difficult questions which continued to pop up the more I used the software. So Tidy Songs doesn't have a clue where it's at or what it's doing at this point.... and neither do I... at least with my itunes library. Maybe if you had a small manageable itunes library that pretty much was intact already..... but then why would you need TidySongs.... And at $39 price who needs the added frustration of false promises.... ps.... I just searched youtube for TidySongs tutorials and everyone of them has been disabled for comments.... does that tell you anything?

You know, for me, that background music service would accomplish about 90% of the multitasking I would like to do. I travel alot, so I would like to be able to listen to internet radio while surfing the web on a WiFi connection. I know that's stretching the capabilities of my 2 year old 3G device, but I'm the Iphone 4 can handle it.

PS, mark my words, MS7 Phone will have copy/paste. I just can't see them sticking to their guns on this one.

Bill,
First of all I would like to address your concerns about how I presented my material. Apparently, you felt that I was one sided in talking about copy and paste. I regret that you feel this way. I would like you to know that I always take a fair and objective view when I’m writing. If my comment about Microsoft fanboys in anyway offended you, I would like to apologize for this. It was meant for humor, not attack.

With that said I was not aware of the Engadget article that you quoted. I would like to thank you for bringing that article to my attention. As you can see at the bottom of my article I quoted two different sources. The first being PCMAG.com (http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2361377,00.asp), and the second being The Register (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/03/17/cut_n_paste_b_gone/). Please feel free to read the articles on both of these sites.

In The Register article they do bring up the fact that Windows Phone 7 Series can automatically detect phone numbers and the such for interaction with other applications. However, it does not address the fact that true cut, copy, and paste are not going to be included on the Windows Phone 7 Series. This is the point I wanted to get across.

You were so kind to direct my attention to the Engadget article, I would like to return the favor, by pointing out that Engadet has made an update to their copy and paste section:

“Copy and paste: conspicuously missing ?UPDATED

Beyond the lack of true multitasking, Microsoft has another notably absent headline feature that'll undoubtedly ruffle some feathers: copy and paste. In light of the flak Apple took for leaving copy and paste out of the initial releases of the iPhone's OS, you'd think Microsoft would've taken the plunge and made this happen, but we get the impression it's all about time constraints here and they simply prioritized a real clipboard too low on the list to make the cut for the first release of the platform. Instead, they're offering up some supposedly rich data-detection services that will sniff out phone numbers from messages and documents and the like, which cuts the pain a tad -- but it's certainly no replacement, and the company's lines about end-users not actually needing a clipboard system ring a little hollow to our ears.”

Engadget goes on to talk about Delighters, this is what they had to say:

“"Delighters": What you see here isn't the full list of functionality and features -- Microsoft has said it'll be rolling out "delighters" over time that extend the platform in unique and interesting ways. We don't know exactly what they'll be, but we were flat-out told that copy / paste support isn't among the group, so that's that.”

As you can see what you sent, conflicts with what Engadget had updated. So, this would lead me to believe that you are being one sided in regards to Microsoft’s decision. Fortunately, I don’t see it this way, and don’t interpret what I’m saying to you as being wrong. I’m simply demonstrating how multiple articles will have different points. In this case Engadget had made updates. If this link - http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/18/windows-phone-7-series-the-complete-guide/ is not what you read, please feel free to point me to the article you read. This is where I found the update to copy and paste.

I would add to federico's comment:

-- Use the tax-free money (and other donors' money) as the marketing muscle of your for-profit companies (helping spread freebies or subsidized products as necessary to hurt competition while promoting your for-profit products and even to helping meet revenue/sales goals).

-- Use the organization to help lock-in lucrative government (and private) contracts for the for-profit businesses.

-- Use the organization to help pass laws (and establish standards) that favor your for-profit companies.

-- Use the organization to spread misleading lofty ideas about the (imaginary) value of patents (and other monopolies) in helping society and promoting progress, monopolies that ultimately help you gouge the public more easily.

-- Do all of this while keeping a straight face.

I'm somewhat unsurprised that an Apple fanboy left out a rather important piece of information:

From Engadget: Microsoft says leaving clipboard operations out was a conscious design decision based on user research showing that people don't actually use copy and paste very often, and that instead 7 Series features a systemwide data detection service which recognizes things like phone numbers and addresses so you can take action on them. Third-party apps can hook into this service, so that an email address can be routed to the email client of your choice, but there's no copy and paste functionality.

This, again, is similar to the iPhone, but nonetheless is important to mention. Your post is skewed to lead the reader to believe that there will be NO way of using information between programs (i.e., tap to dial a number, etc.).

While Windows Phone 7 won't make me give up my iPhone, you've got to give Microsoft a little credit. After all, Apple likely agrees with Microsoft on this and only included copy and paste after enough of us bitched about it for a long time.

Your writing reads like Fox News... fair and balanced?

I bought Tidy songs to fix a small percentage of my 4000 odd songs. It did nothing but mess up my entire collection splitting albums out.

Tidysongs did reply telling me the reason it did this is because they were compilation albums and that is the way their programworks because customers prefer it.

I had two problems with this a) the albums iit split were not compilations I had stipulated this in my first email and b) who is it exactly who wants 20 odd albums with only one song on each when they could have the original compilation album with all the songs that belong on it?

My review = terrible, over priced program that hasn't been trialed or advertised properly.

Tidysongs will ruin your itunes library and waste your time!
