I imagine a lot of professional photographers will love this.
The iPad has a gorgeous display by consumer standards, but it's not very well suited for work that requires precise colour reproduction.
This might help alleviate some of the problems.

Sorry--I posted this wrong. I meant to reply to Jwcorey, but posted It as a new thread instead. So this is a repost: In any case it says both: "In Path 2.0.6, released to the App Store today, you are prompted to opt in or out of sharing your phone’s contacts with our servers in order to find your friends and family on Path."

The iPad is not meant to be a computer and is also not a toy. There are many productivity uses as well as many business bringing them into their ecosystem

I don't feel everything has been dumbed down, in some cases it's simply a matter of making it easier for those who aren't as advanced, while still making things accessible for the users who wish them

I do not want a touchscreen Macintosh and do not want any more creep of the Mac OS interface in the direction of ToiOS (iOS). Jobs described Mac OS as a truck and stated that there would always be a need and market for trucks.

The redesign of iMovie caused it's deletion from my hard drive and a migration to Final Cut Express and later Pro. When I upgrade next time I will look at what Avid and Adobe have to offer as Apple has totally pissed me off with it's never ending dumbing down and lock down of the Mac OS.

Note to Apple- stop removing features (QuickTime X vs real QuickTime), hiding formerly open UI preference settings (try getting around the setup wizard for Mail if you wish to configure G-Mail as a POP account on your Mac, for instance) and screwing around with the basics of the UI (hiding the system folder on 10.7, reversing the default scrolling behavior). Stop trying to fix what is not broken.

I own an iPad and it's a nice toy- it sucks as a computer and is compromised as a Kindle (glossy rear lit screen vs e-ink). It in no way is a replacement for a real computer- it's an oversized iPhone.

Holy Crap - I thought I was the only one who spent a fair amount of time arranging my icons by page, usage, and aesthetics. I like to group mine by color and icon picture type, i.e., my home screen will usually have the maps and weather together, and/or app store, itunes, weather, and logmein ignition, with reminders calculator notes and settings on the bottom row. My dock is phone, mail, safari, and music.
Apple has got to free up the icon placement and folder usage, the gridlock has run its course and its time for some freedom (w/o jailbreaking).

I think you nailed it. That's exactly the advice I would give anyone who's on the fence. I'll bet that anyone who takes the time to dig a little deeper will really like what they find. I work in a shop with 4-5 other editors. Everyone, including me, was ready to jump to Adobe. I took the time to do the fcpX tutorial (Weynard), then gave a little workshop to everyone else as kind of an intro and overview. Now everyone is getting excited about it and working thru the tutorial too. I think we'll be staying with X.

I think a lot of folks sat down with X, gave it a quick, cursory workover and got very frustrated. Add the fact that they didn't have alot of the old features, like multi-cam editing (which they now have) and no backward compatability (which I'm sure will come), I understand why alot of folks were frustrated, as was I. I think you're right to say 'when you're not sure, don't move". Apple did a horrible, unprofessional job of introducing this new software and not managing expectations early on. But I feel that what they've come up with shows a real commitment to the art of editing and I'm sure in time they'll have pretty much all the problems solved. During this testing time, I took another look at avid and adobe, as I was going thru the tutorial for fcpX. I slowy came to the conclusion that X was a real leap forward. I'm sticking with X.

Paul - you ask if FCPX offers anything that Avid/Adobe don't, and I would say yes. Apple has gambled, big time, and it may pay off or maybe not. Avid and Adobe have maintained the things they are good at, and the enhancements they've added over the last however many years have been astounding in many cases (Dynamic Link from Adobe is a miracle worker). But by and large, Avid and Adobe play it relatively safe, doing nothing that is 100% groundshaking but doing the things that their customers say that they need.

Apple's approach has the potential to piss everyone off, but also to lead people in a new - possibly better - direction. The simplicity of the timeline in FCPX is long overdue (we really don't need to be mimicking linear edits like we used to). But then, the backwards compatibility of Avid and Adobe is what allows people to move forward without losing any past work. That's what scares people, and whether it's right or wrong, being scared is not what most of us are in this business for. We're only human, after all, and we like to stay comfortable as often as we can. FCPX has some worthwhile features and good speed improvements beyond FCP7, but it doesn't compare any better in many regards to Avid or Adobe. So if you're choosing for speed, all of them are fast now. If you're choosing for the most compatibility, you really can't choose FCPX yet.

My background came from an old Avid Meridien. I've also work on Adobe Premiere 5.1 wich is a complete different piece of software right now. For the last couple of years I edit on FCP even if I personally own the Adobe Master Collection.

I waited 7 months to determine if my company moves with Avid (again) or Adobe. When you are not sure, don't move.

3 weeks ago, we decide to install the FCPX trial version on 1 editing station. Like you said, we hated FCPX at first. But after a couple of tutorial, Bang! We saw a future for this software. Not exactly the same we was hoping for. I thought Apple will deploy a FCP 8 or whatever.

Doesn't matter now!
I love FCPX better than I thought I would do. I've also gained speed in my workflow.

Apple reinvent the editing and I'm glad they did it.

again, CJ, thanks for adding. nailed it.

i agree that Adobe likely didn't plan an ambush, but i'm sure the discount bundle nature of the production suite always had a "maybe if they have it, they'll try it component."

excellent points.

I understand that they can't alter the history after the fact, but I would love an extension that just does the same thing for Google links as this one does for Twitter… simply unwraps the URLs before logging them in the browser history so that the history is intelligible rather than utterly useless as it is now.

I'd be happy to be wrong about this. But I think Apple is more concerned with Amazon's online music sales and music steaming than Netflix' DVD rentals and video streaming. But I will root for Amazon Prime streaming on Apple TV.

Excellent post. I don't even want to think about how many apps, currently running on my phone, access and transmit my data without my knowledge. The funny thing is, most people would have probably given Path (and others) permission, had it only been an option. I would have.

I can't imagine Apple is going to let Amazon, a competitor, play Prime over the Apple TV.
The Detox Safari Extension does indeed only unwrap Twitter links. Another thing to understand is, that these extensions cannot alter the browsing history after the fact. They do however help correctly resolve any links from then on.

I know this isn't available for anything but Twitter and a few other services so far, but in the end the solution has to come from Apple itself, as other browsers have no problem unwrapping URLs before logging them in the browser history.

I hope this helps.

I did want to add a final observation of mine to this discussion. Over the last 18 months or so, I've encountered many people who owned Creative Suite (CS4 or CS5) and used After Effects and Photoshop extensively but had never so much as opened Premiere Pro. They were FCP editors and so understandably they felt very little reason to bother. However, some of them had checked out Premiere Pro and came away thinking "how did I not know that it could do this or this or this?" and obviously a lot of fanfare from FCP editors going int PPro for the first time comes from the native editing for things like AVCHD and RED and other formats without having to transcode or ingest through a number of steps.

Obviously once FCPX hit, many of the FCP people I know who had Premiere Pro installed but had still yet to try it started giving it a run. That's the thing that has hurt Apple the most I think. Many people already had Creative Suite because of the price discount versus buying After Effects and Photoshop independently, and so many folks really didn't have to make an active purchasing decision when they decided to dump FCP7 and FCPX, they just had to click an icon and open an application that was already installed on their computer.

I'm not sure that's how Adobe planned it, but it's the equivalent of having a sleeper cell ready to go on the attack, just waiting years for the right moment to do it. Again, I wouldn't credit Adobe with having planned it that way (really, who could have predicted what was going to happen when FCPX came out?). Sure FCPX is only $300. And sure, many kids will be cutting their teeth on FCPX this year in a school editing lab. But they will also probably have Creative Suite installed, which means Premiere Pro is still an option. With the interconnected nature of the Adobe apps and the "no rendering" mantra, it's not very farfetched to believe that some of these kids will give Adobe a go on that late night project when they don't have time to keep rendering comps out of After Effects.

It's everyone's surprise all these months later that Apple ever made it possible for any of this to happen.

+1 Paul

That's just the thing...I keep hearing "FCPX is going to be fully featured soon." The reason it doesn't entirely matter to this particular discussion is because some users (currently unquantifiable) have already jumped ship. Not so much to spit on FCP's grave as to look out for #1. Like I mentioned, many users - including some very large houses - were patiently waiting to upgrade to new systems when/if the release of FCP8 came about. The purchase plan was already in effect...it was just a matter of finding out what Apple was going to do. When Apple appeared to shun the professionals and their requirements and shave off major functions from the initial release with little more than a "we'll fix it later...possibly" in response to the uproar, many people decided that was it and put their upgrade plans into effect with Adobe or Avid instead of FCPX.

Vladimir, you ask "what will happen when FCPX gets every single option Premiere or Avid have" and you propose it will be soon (maybe, maybe not). But to suggest that this will be history repeating itself as Apple steals back the NLE crown from Avid or Adobe. I just don't think that is true or really even possible. When FCP stormed the industry 12+ years ago, it offered something that Avid could not, which was desktop editing. Avid was a million dollar solution, and FCP was at most a $5,000 solution, maybe $10,000 with every bell and whistle. As for Premiere, FCP and Premiere had been cut from the same cloth and what really won the day for FCP more than anything was the Apple support for creative professionals, whereas Adobe (in the pre-Macromedia merger days) was really more of a business software company that also sold Photoshop. Nowadays, Adobe is effectively "all-in" on the creative software (Creative Suite) and the Adobe argument is particularly strong on the price point. If you're going to buy Photoshop (likely) and After Effects (maybe, maybe not) then you really ought to go ahead and buy the Creative Suite, because you've more than paid for it by those two applications alone.

If Apple had never bumbled the FCPX release, then everything Adobe and Avid have been doing might have been for nothing. As it stands, nobody can assume safety in the Apple world for professional video like was once the case. Now the options - very good, as they are - have become eminently clearer.

I have many friends working at a very large news organization and any of them will tell you that Adobe reps have been in their building for over a year (preceding even the FCPX release, which should tell you something about their satisfaction with their 3-4 year old FCP7 solution at the time). Point being, it will cost them quite a bit in the near term to migrate to new machines and software but they're planning to do it anyway. Adobe is providing and promises to provide support for even the most unique situations they may encounter in the workflow, whereas Apple has basically said all along "here's the software, good luck."

My point here, summed up as I can make it, is that comparing the situation facing Apple, Avid and Adobe today to the lay of the land 12+ years ago is not a accurate comparison at all. No one company has the sway to take over the edit bays by storm. Apple did have something close to that a year ago, but it's gone and won't likely come back. That's not to say that Apple will disappear because they won't, but they will not likely find the domination in the pro video realm that they once had.

No, "I'm not an Hypocrite" - you are NOT a Hypocrite. YOU ARE A MORON! When the tables turn and you see more and more advertising of hot, young muscular, well-endowed dumb males in advertisements for cleaning products and other things targeted towards female audiences, maybe you will have an IOTA of an idea of what sexist advertisements feel like to its viewers. Until then, I'm glad I don't have "men" (using that term loosely here) like you in my life! Serious respect to you, Jwcorey! You are a REAL man! ;)

I’m really curious who’s using Wolfram Alpha – I’ve tried so many times but usually end up with it trying to give me the caloric value of a banana.

As awesome as that is, what are folks successfully using it for?

thanks for the input. i appreciate your personal first-hand experience.

i do think a lot of people think the time "re-learn" is a resource they can't afford, and that may be true for some larger houses, or small houses that are busy, busy, busy (is there one like this right now? if so, can i have some of your work?!?).

but i have always said, if you're going to get FCPX, do this: download the free 30-day trial, and risk $50 or so on the ripple training (or other reputable) instructional videos. go all the way through them, trying the techniques with some of your own videos.

if you don't like it at that point, you've wasted a couple of days and $50. if you can't spare that, you have business problems larger than which NLE you're using. my guess is, even if you decide not to use FCPX as your main NLE right away, you will see what an amazing leap forward it is in so many ways.

this is hopefully true, though it's unfortunate that Apple set back their lead by about 10 years. they were there. they were in. they bumbled the release and mistargeted the expectation, i think. time will tell.

Although I don't think it's a good idea in the immediate, I do quite like the idea of Apple going to ARM chips. Though Apple were severely hampered during the PPC days, at least back then, it felt like a 'Mac was a Mac'; completely incomparable to a Windows machine, in regards to its hardware and software.

It might be pretty cool; Apple, once again the 'underdogs' -- I reckon they could use a smudge more of the 'Think Different' mentality in this day and age.

But these are more nostalgic ramblings, rather than practical suggestions … Apple won't move to ARM unless they absolutely have to.

Like most, I hated FCP X when I first sat down to play with it. Nothing was familiar, new names, couldn't find stuff, blah, blah, blah. Like most I tried to take all my old FCP knowledge use it in X. Bad idea. I was ready to drop all things apple and move on too. But before giving up, I ordered a copy of the new FCP X tutorial by Weynard and went thru it. Then the dawn broke. Now I love it and believe that Apple has truly reinvented editing in a better way. There are so many new aspects of X that are big time savers and make editing faster and more efficient. Yes I had to relearn the technology almost from the ground up. But I've been editing for over 30 years, and by my count I have had to relearn how to edit using totally new technology at least 9 different times in my career. Jumping from FCP 7 to X is no big deal if you take a day or two to do the tutorial. It's far better and easier than making the jump to Premiere (which if find very dense and forbidding). So stop whining; take some time to learn a new piece of software, and join the next generation of video editing. Pretty soon all the young folks will be whipping along on it. Will you???

I don't see ARM getting into the Pro line anytime soon, but an ARM-based MacBook Air with 10+ hours of battery life would be a no-brainer for Apple.

Well, here's the thing. When you take the SD card out of the GoPro and move the quicktime into, say, After Effects, it sees it as a 120fps quicktime. I can interpolate it a 30fps and I have a really nice slo-mo clip. When I do the same process using the Camera Kit from Apple and import the same clip onto the iPad, both Avid and iMovie play it back in real time (ie, whatever the original frame rate is).
As a test, I imported a short clip into Avid Studio on the iPad. This clip was shot at 120fps. I output it from Avid. When I move these quicktimes onto my Mac and into After Effects, the source footage is at 120fps and the newly output clips from both Avid and iMovie are both 30 or 29,97).
I could complain about either app, but at $5, it was worth a shot. What I would really like to see is an app that is just a playback app that could read frame rates and interpolate accordingly. It's a shame to shoot at high frame rates and only get to watch it play back at those same high frame rates.Still loving the idea of editing on the iPad. I wouldn't want to do it professionally, but for the videos of the kids on a Saturday, it's pretty cool to edit it right there! Thanks for the help.

Well, you answered my question at the end of your review. I have to purchase the app for all three devices separately. This app looks great! I may have to just fork out the $30 for apps in order to use it to it's fullest. thanks for the review!

I think what people continue to ignore is how READY a lot of FCP users were for a major upgrade. When I hear people respond to the FCPX fury with "well yeah, but you didn't HAVE to upgrade to FCPX" I think it misses the whole point. These FCP editors were planning to make an upgrade (hardware along with software, possibly) whenever the big new version of FCP came out. When it came out as FCPX and showed where the end of the road would be, all of these people who were ready to upgrade regardless did exactly that....but instead of FCPX, they went to Adobe or Avid, and many upgraded to newer PC hardware since they were no longer locked into the Mac hardware as a result of their NLE selection.

So no, many users were NOT required to upgrade by any means, but they had needs that looked to not be filled for some time once FCPX launched, when they felt they had already waited a long time for various solutions. So they looked around and gave Adobe and Avid another shot. What they are finding now is that Adobe and Avid are very capable solutions available on cheaper hardware and with better support for the professional video producer.

FCPX was mishandled in my opinion and while it may not cost Apple in the long-term (yet to be seen how many actually jumped ship for good), it has certainly given Avid and Adobe an opportunity that they probably never should have gotten. From all appearances, Avid and Adobe have done their part to make the most out of this situation. It's awfully hard to try to put the toothpaste back into the tube.

If you apply this logic to the transportation, we would drive cars on steam, or maybe ride horses today :)

What will happen when FCPX gets every single option Premiere or Avid have, and in this pace it will be very soon ? The same what happened with the launch of FCP 1.0.

After he told me the best method to get a free iPad, it always helps me with all sorts of questions I have. This is his job and I appreciate very much his website free-us-ipad.com .
I hope that he will help you with your all questions. It is an amazing man. All my family got free iPads . It's a user proof category there if you don`t believe me. This man is my idol

Where's the study on iOS's crash reporting capability and reliability vs Android's? That's my question. :P

Thats right.
Apple doesn't care about Pros anymore.
Next they will mess up Logic and they will loose a huge user base because of that.
But nobody at Apple will care, they make a lot of money with their iToys.

Until all the kids will find that another company is the new 'cool', and won't be buying their iToys anymore.
