A couple months ago I wrote an article about Apple and gaming. I said that they would eventually compete, if for no other reason than the millions of people already owning the device. I also said that it would be a matter of time before we saw some legitimate games that would actually be able to compete with the DS and PSP. Everyone balked at the concept, and thought that I was flat out wrong. I even introduced the “Wii” factor. I said the concept similarities and possibilities between the Wii and the iPhone could make the iPhone to the DS as the Wii is to the Xbox 360. Starting to see my point?

Brothers in Arms, an iPhone game, has been getting major press today from a number of other blogs who are pretty excited about the concept of the accelerometer controlling the propelling of grenades at your enemies, and you can also use the touch screen to aim and shoot at enemies. I have to admit, I’m just as excited as the rest of the bloggers talking about it right now. Not only does it prove my point that we’re on the cusp of a whole new gaming experience that will be very successful, but it also shows developers willingness to port games from the DS to the iPhone. Whether we like to admit it or not, the bazillion iPhones sold over the last year and a half makes for a lot of potential consoles. The graphics look on par with the DS version as well. Stick around folks, gaming on the iPhone is about to get really interesting.

Well, Google has officially released a utility to configure Google Calendar as CalDav calendars in iCal.

Those hackers are tearing the iPhone to shreds these days. First came jailbreaks, then came Linux on the iPhone. Now, there’s speculation that Android might be a possibility. This is starting to get exciting. I love my iPhone and wouldn’t change anything about it, but the possibility of putting a whole new phone OS on my device, if I feel like it, is mighty enticing. It’s a ways off, but would you try Android out on your iPhone? There’s a lot of possibilities that this brings to the surface. First, the iPhone could become more mobile desktop than cellphone. Second, it could make a lot of people aware of linux, and how great those operating systems have become over the last couple years. Third, given the state of the open source community, it would only be a matter of time before some sweet homebrew options pop-up (probably the most exciting part). The next couple of months will be pretty exciting.

Below is the iPhone linux demonstration.

Apple has released Quicktime Update 7.5.7 to address the issue with the HDCP protection error message on standard definition movies while attempting to play a movie with an external display on the MacBook and MacBookPros with a Mini DisplayPort. It’s a recommended update. You can obtain the download from here or by going to Software Update, I was not able to see or download the update, so it looks like it might only be for October 2008 MacBook, MacBook Pro owners.
New in this version is the ability to transcode other sources of video besides DVDs. On the flip side, there is no longer any more built-in DVD decryption. While this may seem like bad news to users on the surface, it isn't really that bad. If you're a Mac user, and you install VLC in your applications folder, it will transparently use VLC's decrypting engine. Cool, huh?

Handbrake, the popular multi-platform transcoding tool, has officially released version 0.9.3 to the public today. New in this version is the ability to transcode other sources of video besides DVDs. On the flip side, there is no longer any more built-in DVD decryption. While this may seem like bad news to users on the surface, it isn’t really that bad. If you’re a Mac user, and you install VLC in your applications folder, it will transparently use VLC’s decrypting engine. Cool, huh?

Along with the big updates come numerous small updates. Video queues are now saved between sessions. More than two audio tracks can be included in each video. All new presets are available for download to keep everything simple. Most importantly, the quality of the finished product is now better thanks to many updates to x264, the encoding workhorse underneath Handbrake’s shiny interface.

The developers have outdone themselves with this version. Make sure to get a copy of it for yourself.
It was only a matter of time before the firmware patch dropped on us. It’s been in the rumor mill for over a week. The rumors were right. Street View is now available on the iPhone, but for some reason Touch users get left out in the cold. I guess it makes sense, considering you can’t navigate the streets with your Touch, unless you’re hoping from open access point to open access point. We now get the ability to get our podcasts over edge/3g or wifi, which comes as a bit of relief. You also now have the ability to turn auto-correction off, this isn’t an excuse for you to throw spelling to the wind. Don’t be that guy!

It comes on the heels of the iPhone/Touch firmware upgrade 2.2. Sadly, they haven’t implemented my idea of having your equalizer automatically adjust for certain genres of music, but I’m not surprised…after all… who the heck am I?

Apple has reported that this patch fixes the following issues:

• Addresses a quality issue creating MP3s on some computers.
• Fixes a connectivity issue with the iTunes Store when using some Internet proxies with Mac OS X.
• Improves accessibility with VoiceOver.

Looks like Psystar will soon be going out of business. Today, Judge William Alsup dismissed Psystar’s lawsuit claiming that Apple was unfairly being a monopoly by only allowing OS X to be installed on Apple machines and not allowing clones.

This decision will set a very interesting precedent with regards to having a company lock a piece of software to its own company’s hardware. This does a significant blow to forcing openness among the computing community and having interoperation between systems.

Some might claim that this decision, in the long run, will not do any significant damage since the trend is for having users put all of their information and do most of their computing tasks on the interwebs.

Pystar does have until December 18th to try and clean up their suit in order to attempt to convince the judge that their defense is legitimate.

I would have liked to have seen Pystar actually win the case, so that Apple would have to allow OS X on cloned machines, thus expanding Apple’s reach and providing yet more of a ‘halo’ effect. But, it is not to be.

I’m not a lawyer, so do not take my interpretation with anything less than a handful of salt. But it looks like the end of the road for Psystar. Guess we’ll all have to rely on the OSx86 project.
