Disable “Example is an application downloaded from the internet”

September 13, 2010

A lot of people, including myself, get quite annoyed by OS X’s “Example is an application downloaded from the internet” dialog box. So, here’s a quick and easy way to disable it. Please note, this technique uses Terminal.app, so if you’re uncomfortable using the command line, it’s best to not try this approach.

Disable Example is an application downloaded from the internet

Open up Terminal.app (found in User/Applications/Utilities) and type (or copy and paste) the following command:

defaults write com.apple.LaunchServices LSQuarantine -bool NO

To re-enable the “Downloaded from the internet” feature, just type this:

defaults write com.apple.LaunchServices LSQuarantine -bool YES

Also, be sure to use the killall Finder command to activate it! :D

iOS 4.1 coming September 8

Apple has announced on their UK iPhone site that iOS 4.1 is expected to be released on September 8th.

This iOS software is highly anticipated for all the bug fixes and for new features like HDR photos and Game Centre, as well as a significant speed improvement for iPhone 3G users.

iOS 4.1 is actually currently available for download for developers, but for those of us who aren’t devs, we only have a few days to wait until the update. Also, please note that this update isn’t available for iPad owners, but iOS 4.2 for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad will be released this November.

Make iTunes 10s traffic lights horizontal

September 2, 2010

Apple released iTunes 10 yesterday (September 1st, 2010) and there are two things that I don’t like about it. First, the ugly new iTunes icon, and second, the traffic lights. Apple made the traffic lights in this version of iTunes vertical. Fortunately, both of these “problems” are easy fixes. For the icon, I just downloaded a replacement icon, and for the traffic lights, I used Terminal.app to make them horizontal.

So, the first thing to do is open up Terminal. Once it’s open, enter the following command:

defaults write com.apple.iTunes full-window -1
Make iTunes 10s traffic lights horizontal

That should make the traffic lights horizontal. If you ever want to set them back to vertical, just type:

defaults write com.apple.iTunes full-window -0
Make iTunes 10s traffic lights horizontal

Microsoft Co-founder is suing Apple and Google

August 27, 2010

Paul Allen, co-founder of Microsoft, is going on a suing spree, suing 11 internet search and e-commerce companies.

Apple, Google, and 9 other internet companies are named in a lawsuit. Paul Allen says that all of the companies are using a technology that his now-obsolete company, Interval Research Corp., developed over ten years ago.

Allen claims that his defunct company developed the “online recommendations” technology, which all of these 11 companies that are involved in the suit, are using on their websites. The online recommendation feature includes recommend products similar to the one which the customer is looking at, as well as providing related search terms on search engines.

The companies which were named in the suit are Apple, Google, AOL, eBay, Facebook, Netflix, Office Depot, Office Max, Staples, Yahoo and YouTube. What’s interesting about this is that Paul Allen is not suing any companies that are located in the Seattle (Allen’s hometown) area, such as Amazon and Microsoft.

Macbook Pro dropped at 195 mph and still boots

A motorcycle enthusiast  went for a ride on his bike with his Macbook Pro in his backpack. During his ride, the zipper on his backpack somehow got unzipped, and his beloved Macbook fell out of his bag while he was riding at a speed of 195 miles per hour.

It was a nice Sunday afternoon and the boys wen out for a ride… on some damn powerful motorcycles… One of them took his brand new MabBook Pro 13? on his standard back pack… When testing the bike at 315km/h [195mph], the backpack zip started to fail… and all of the sudden, the macbook flew trough the air… landing on the side of the road, beginning a series of turns and crushes from about 150 meters… while being torn apart.

The aluminum casing is completely bent and pretty much destroyed. But, all hope is not lost yet, because his Macbook still boots when connected to an external monitor!

The best part… we try to make it work again…. and we could!!!
the hard disk, motherboard and superdrive survived! and with an external monitor, keyboard/mouse and new ddr3 memory modules… it booted!!

Well, what can I say? You got extremely lucky here, but just remember to never bring your Macbook with you when you’re out on your bike trying to impress all the ladies.

Google Apps now with push notifications for Gmail

Google Apps now with push notifications for Gmail
Up until now, users had to use third party or jailbroken apps to get push notifications for Gmail on their iPhones. Not anymore, though. Google just recently released an update version of their app, with all the features that people have wanted for a long time.

This update, which is free on the iTunes App Store, allows users to sign into one or multiple Google accounts, as well as setting up Gmail and Google Calendar push notifications, which work very well. It is not yet clear how quickly the app alerts you after you receive an email.

Another new feature is the ability to set “quiet times,” which turns off push notifications and sound during the hours of your choosing.

Google Introduces New Ad Formats for iPad Developers

August 23, 2010

Google Introduces New Ad Formats for iPad DevelopersIf you’re an iPad dev that just can’t wait for iAds, and you want to get ads on your free application as soon as possible, you may be interested in Google’s new ad format for iPad. They were just recently launched for iPad devs in Canada and USA.

In a recent blog post by Google Mobile Ads, they said:

“The new iOS SDK supports ad serving in iPad apps using three of the most common online ad formats, instantly making it easier for developers to grow their businesses and for advertisers to expand their presence to the iPad.

Advertisers whose campaigns run on the Google Display Network and include text or image ads in the above sizes can now show ads within iPad applications – provided their campaigns are targeting mobile devices or specifically the iPad.”

If you’ve used Google Adsense before, you probably know that Google doesn’t have the prettiest ads, so if you want to make sure your app is as sexy as it can be, you might just want to wait until iAds is available for iPad.

However, if you’re just interested in making a couple bucks off your free app, and you’re not that concerned with its appearance, you may want to check out the new ad formats.

Angry Birds: The Movie

August 22, 2010

Angry Birds: The MovieAngry Birds is one of the best selling iPhone/iPad games to date, with almost seven million downloads.

With Rovio‘s success, they’re apparently looking into more commercial avenues for Angry Birds, such as a movie and/or television show. Most people already know about the great job that the company did with the game’s animation, as well as a trailer that was released. The question is, do they have enough good content for a feature length film?

According to Rovio, they have been approached by several movie studios wanting to make a movie with Angry Birds, and Rovio is seriously considering doing so.

I don’t really think they could make a full length film based on the game. It just seems like a bit much. I could, however, see them making a half-hour television “special” or something similar to that. What do you think? Would you like an Angry Birds movie? Leave a comment!
