Apple Buys Locationary

Apple has purchased Locationary. An Apple spokesmen has confirmed the deal with All Things D. The company is a “wikipedia” for companies, and it will undoubtably help Apple compete in the mapping space.

John Paczkowski, reporting for All Things D:

It uses crowdsourcing and a federated data exchange platform called Saturn to collect, merge and continuously verify a massive database of information on local businesses around the world, solving one of location’s biggest problems: out-of-date information.

It’s a pretty big win for anyone who relies on Apple’s Maps service on an iPhone. It’s also curious to see Apple making a move after Waze, a company it was rumored to be courting, decided to sell to Google for $1 Billion.
