Windows 8.1 To Bring Back Start Button, SPOILER It Does Nothing

The Windows Start Button is reportedly making its way back to Microsoft’s OS in the upcoming Windows 8.1 update. Unfortunately for you, just like the goggles, it does nothing.

One of the biggest controverises surrounding Windows 8’s release was the decision to remove the Start Menu and replace it with the Start Screen. While the Start Screen is clearly more aesthetically pleasing and is better for tablets, many argue that the Start Menu is far better when it comes to pure productivity. Microsoft removed all traces of the Start Menu in Windows 8.

The Verge reports, however, that the Start Button, the button that leads to the Start Menu, will be returning in the upcoming Windows 8.1 update. Unfortunately, the button won’t be bringing you the Start Menu like it used to, it will be bringing you to the Start Screen. That’s right, the button will simply function as an aesthetic change that adds another way to take you to the Start Screen. At the moment, all it takes is a tap of the Windows key on your keyboard to launch the Start Menu, so the addition of an on-screen button seems like an odd one.

If you’ve been hoping that Microsoft was going to back-pedal on some of the drastic changes it made with Windows 8, it’s probably fine to stop holding your breath now.
