As an avid urban cyclist in the city of Chicago, I’m always a bit paranoid about my bicycle being stolen. After all, it is my main mode of transportation and a source of fun and exercise. Because of this, I’m in need of a way to track my bicycle if it is ever stolen (*knock on wood*) so I have an easier way to work with Chicago law enforcement to retrieve my bike. While I haven’t been able to find a simple tracking device to do this yet, BikeSpike, a current Kickstarter project, may be able to solve this issue in the near future.
The BikeSpike is a small and discrete cellular-connected GPS tracking device for your bicycle. Once attached to your bicycle, you can track it via the included iPhone or Android app. The app allows you to digitally lock your bike. Once locked, you will receive a notification on your smartphone and email when your bicycle is moved. If your bike is ever stolen, you can tell your friends by sharing its location via Twitter, Facebook or text message. The app also allows you to contact local law enforcement with the push of a button.
Not only does the BikeSpike protect your bike from theft, but it also allows you to track your rides. Using the BikeSpike app, you can track your incline, speed and other statistics. This is helpful for those who race or do bike tours and want to keep their rides well-documented.
Finally, the BikeSpike’s built-in accelerometer can tell if you’ve been in a crash. If you’re ever in a crash, a set list of contacts will be notified automatically.
The BikeSpike is a collaboration between two Chicago-based firms: Three Man Rocket and ColorJar. The device is currently up for funding on Kickstarter and can be preordered for $155. It’s worth noting that the BikeSpike does require a low-priced data plan, though a free trial is included for all Kickstarter backers. The BikeSpike also comes with an API, giving hackers and developers the ability to develop applications that work with the BikeSpike.
