AT&TÂ announced today its smartphones sales record during the fourth quarter of 2012. The U.S. operator surpassed the 10 million mark for the first time in its history, beating last year’s 9.4 million record.
AT&T connects its success to “best quarterly sales of Android and Apple smartphones,” which included the release of Apple’s iPhone 5 that went on sale at the end of September.
In September, AT&T announced that the new iPhone had already overtaken the iPhone 4S as the fastest selling Apple device ever. This was just before Apple’s own announcement that it had sold more than 2 million devices in 24 hours and 5 million over opening weekend.
AT&T president and CEO Ralph de la Vega said that AT&T “averaged more than 110,000 smartphone sales a day as customers flocked to out leading portfolio of the latest Android, Apple and Windows devices.”
In the third quarter, AT&T had announced that it activated 4.7 million iPhones during the three month period, which came to 77 percent of its 6.1 million total smartphone activations.
AT&T’s full fourth-quarter financial report is due to be published on January 24.
