TIME magazine this morning released their list of eight finalists in the running for its 2012 Person of the Year cover, an award that goes to the person who made the most significant impact over the course of the year, for better or for worse.

One of the nominees includes Apple’s CEO Tim Cook, who took over the position from Steve Jobs just over a year ago. Since filling the position, Cook has been credited with making efforts to improve Chinese factory working conditions as well as the recent decision to move some manufacturing jobs over to the United States. Cook has also headed the launch of several new Apple products over the course of the year.

Other nominees include:

  • Yahoo CEO: Marissa Meyer
  • President of Egypt: Mohammed Morsi
  • Undocumented Americans/Immigrants
  • Bill and Hillary Clinton
  • Barack Obama
  • Student activist from Pakistan: Malala Yousafzai
  • Higgs Boson Discoverer: Fabiola Gianatti

The winner of last year’s award went to The Protestor. This year, TIME also held a reader’s choice Person of the Year, with the winner being Kim Jong Un, Supreme Leader of North Korea.

This year’s winner will be decided by the magazine’s editors and announced on Wednesday morning.
