Magazine Publisher Future Made $8 Million From Apple’s Newsstand In One Year

Future is a magazine publisher based in the UK and it has made about $8 million over the past year. Now, Future is planning to build out its existing digital distribution model thanks to this success.

For those that don’t know, Newsstand is an iOS app that allows users to purchase, organize, and store digital publications all in one place. And Future’s success in digital publications is in large part thanks to this app by Apple.

Future was one of the first companies to use this service when it first launched in 2011 with iOS 5. Future announced their successful rise in profits on Thursday at an interim trading update. According to Future, “Sales of digital editions on Apple devices has passed £5 million ($8 million) in the period since the Apple Newsstand was launched in October 2011.”

Magazines published by this firm include PC Gamer, popular tech serial T3 and MacLife, which have had hard copies printed for years. Before Newsstand, Future’s digital publishing was limited to web portals like TechRadar, BikeRadar and GamesRadar.

CEO of Future, Mark Wood, said: “In March, we were at over 12 million (free) container app downloads, had five million people signed up for marketing messages, which is a lot, and way past half a million sales.”

Future is not the only company to see significant profit increases after using Newsstand. Less than a month after the service was launched, Conde Nast reported a 268 percent surge in subscriptions and Popular Science + saw similar improvements.
