Google’s Schmidt Says Google Maps In Limbo For iOS
Apple Maps got you down? Better get used to it. According to Google Chairmen Eric Schmidt, Google Maps for iOS appears to be on ice until Apple makes a decision on whether or not they would allow the application into the App Store.
According to Bloomberg, Google hasn’t done anything with Google Maps, nor does it sound like Google is rushing to create a new application for its mapping service:
“We haven’t done anything yet with Google Maps,” Schmidt told reporters in Tokyo today. Apple would “have to approve it. It’s their choice,” Schmidt said, declining to say if the Mountain View, California-based company submitted an application to Apple for sale through its App Store.
In actuality it’s probably only a matter of time until a Google Maps application shows up in the App Store. Google already has 17 applications available, ranging from a Google+ application to Currents, Gmail, and Google Drive offerings, among others.
Given the public outcry regarding the new Maps app, the sooner a legitimate competitor makes its way to the iPhone, the better. Apple’s Maps has a lot to offer, but it’s certainly not on par with Google’s Maps offerings where it matters most, getting directions.
