Microsoft recently announced that they will be selling their Windows 8 Pro operating system for $39.99 to all current users of either Windows XP, Vista or 7. Users who go this route will have to download the upgrade and will not receive a restore DVD. On the other hand, Microsoft will be selling a boxed version of Windows 8 on store shelves. This boxed version of Windows 8 Pro will retail for $69.99 and can be used to install a full version of Windows to any computer, even a Mac.
While this all sounds good on paper, the promotion ends on January 31st, 2013. And while Microsoft failed to tell us how much Windows 8 will cost after the promotion ends, The Verge was recently told that the Windows 8 Pro upgrade will cost $69.99 while a full install will retail for $199.99. We are not sure if Microsoft will be offering a digital upgrade discount after the initial promotional period ends.
If you’re unaware, Windows 8 is set to be released on October 26th, 2012, alongside the Windows 8 RT sporting Surface tablet. A consumer preview of Windows 8 has been available for some time and is still available for download free of charge.
