On its blog, Twitter has announced that version 1.1 of the Twitter API will be released in the coming weeks. Details of the update are being released early because of the soon-to-be stricter guidelines for how the Twitter API is used. Twitter is letting users plan ahead for the major changes coming with the update.
According to the blog post, Twitter is changing how it allows third party apps, like the Tweetbot app, to access its services. The guidelines state that third party developers of Twitter clients will have to work closely with Twitter itself to get permission to access their services if they have a large number of users. The number of users is being limited to 100,000 to begin with, but if an app developer already has 100,000 users and gets permission, this number can be increased up to 200,000.
The biggest problem with this is that for apps like Tweetbot it puts a strict limit on how many users the app can have. It’s also a way of forcing users to use other clients, like the official Twitter client, that they may not want to use.
Along with this, Twitter is also making a couple of other changes:
- Required authentication on every API endpoint
- A new per-endpoint rate-limiting methodology
Twitter will also have a migration period of six months where users can migrate applications from version 1.0 to version 1.1. So make sure you make your changes before the six months are up once the update arrives.

It’s almost like these guys forgot how third party apps are directly responsible for the service’s initial growth back when it was first released. What a joke.
