Popular Mail App Sparrow Acquired by Google

Sparrow and their hugely popular email clients for Mac and iOS have been acquired by Google today. The exact terms of the deal were not reported.

When we first saw Sparrow in beta we were impressed, and with numerous updates adding functionality, and the introduction of a mail client for iOS, Sparrow has grown immensely in popularity. I guess it was only a matter of time before others took notice too.

Sparrow’s Chief Executive Dom Leca announced the news on the company’s site this morning to share the excitement and extend a thank you to their users:

We’re excited to announce that Sparrow has been acquired by Google!

We care a lot about how people communicate, and we did our best to provide you with the most intuitive and pleasurable mailing experience.

Now we’re joining the Gmail team to accomplish a bigger vision — one that we think we can better achieve with Google.

We’d like to extend a special thanks to all of our users who have supported us, advised us, given us priceless feedback and allowed us to build a better mail application. While we’ll be working on new things at Google, we will continue to make Sparrow available and provide support for our users.

We had an amazing ride and can’t thank you enough.

Full speed ahead!

While Leca’s note makes a point to affirm that Sparrow will still be available and supported, the sense is they’ll be busy working away on new and exciting things in the Gmail fold.

I, for one, am excited to see the Sparrow team recognized for the outstanding product they put out.  They found a way to make something so common and ordinary as email into a refreshing experience across multiple platforms. No easy task to be sure.

Here’s hoping Sparrow’s incredible vision breathes new life into Google’s mobile clients and enhances the user experience for Google users across platforms.
