Who needs a Smart Cover: Trip the iPad 2’s sleep mode with a fridge magnet

Everyone’s pretty enamoured with the Smart Cover and the auto-sleep functionality that it brings to the iPad 2. It’s so simple and sleek that it’s almost magical. Heck, we’d be completely fine if Apple wanted to rename this thing to the ‘Magic Cover.’

But the fun doesn’t stop there. The fine folks over at TUAW (notably @ericasadun) figured that it would be a good idea to put the magnetic sleep function through the steps with a fridge magnet. As it turns out, a typical fridge magnet also puts the iPad to sleep automatically.

So guess what that means? iPad case hacking is on the horizon. All it’s going to take is some material, some glue, and a decent magnet, and you’re off to the races.

But, be warned. Blasting magical magnetic rays at your electronic devices wasn’t a good idea in the 80s, and it’s certainly not the best idea today. If you fry your iPad, you did it, not us. We’re not paying for squat!
