Apple Has Partnered With TomTom For Its iOS 6 Maps App

Apple’s Maps application, while completely fabulous looking, may not entirely be an in-house developed product like many were assuming it would be leading up to the WWDC Apple keynote yesterday. While Apple did eventually get around to announcing its very own custom Maps application, there were a lot of questions from journalists surrounding the technology that powered the Maps. Late yesterday TomTom announced in a two sentence press release that TomTom has indeed “signed a global agreement with Apple for maps and related information,” and that “No further deals of the agreement will be provided.”

The release, in its entirety, reads:

Amsterdam, 12 June 2012 – TomTom (AEX:TOM2) has signed a global agreement with Apple® for maps and related information. No further details of the agreement will be provided.

At this point, anything else is speculation, but the fact that Apple has partnered with a GPS service provider makes absolute sense when you sit down and think about it. Turn-by-turn, and maps of this quality take a lot of time to put together, and having a partnership with a company like TomTom certainly makes it easier for Apple to deliver a custom Maps experience devoid of Google’s influence.
