WWDC 2012: iOS 6 Coming This Fall, Drops iPad 1 Support

Today, Apple announced that iOS 6 will be coming to users this fall. That’s great news! Sadly, it won’t be coming for everyone. Here are the supported devices for iOS 6:

  • iPhone 3GS
  • iPhone 4
  • iPhone 4S
  • iPod touch 4th Gen
  • iPad 2
  • iPad 3rd Gen

For some reason, the iPod touch 3rd gen is left out despite being extremely similar to the iPhone 3GS. Also, this marks the first iOS update that doesn’t support the original iPad. Goodbye, old friend. Your chunky, curved design will be missed, but we need some more RAM for these apps!

As always, a developer build of iOS 6 will be available for registered iOS devs. I know you’re tempted to go register to get a look at what’s coming, but don’t do it unless you have a spare device. Going back to the stable iOS 5 isn’t officially supported, and your device could get bricked if you try.
