The United States has this awesome museum called the Smithsonian that shows off some pretty cool stuff, and their latest exhibit – The Art of Video Games – is proof positive of that very fact. Techrepublic fills in some details:
“The Art of Video Games” exhibit, recently opened at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, features multimedia showcasing 80 video games and 20 gaming consoles made over the past 40 years. Over 119,000 people voted online last year to help choose the games for each system, based on categories like adventure and action.
You may remember the really old gems like Space Invaders and Pac Man from countless lunch hours wasting quarters at the local arcade. Maybe you only remember them from ironic hipster T-shirts you saw people wearing in the mid-90s. Nevertheless, classic (and modern) video game artwork is a staple of contemporary culture, and this exhibit’s highlighting of the visuals we take for granted is a good way to stop and remember that someone, somewhere had to think all this iconic stuff up.
