Is Apple Secretly Working On A Game Controller For The iPad?

Over the weekend we ran a post on a nifty Kickstarter project that is looking to raise funds to develop a game controller for iOS. Today, the guys at AnandTech dropped a major bomb, telling their readers that they’ve been tipped that there’s an internal project at Apple to create a physical controller for their devices, but that the project may never actually make it to market.

Vivek Gowri of Anandtech on the iOS controller:

While controller support in Android in its infancy at best, it’s more than iOS currently offers. I know of an internal Apple project to bring a physical controller to market, but whether or not it will ever see the light of day remains to be seen. As smartphones and tablets come close to equalling the performance of current game consoles, I feel like the controller problem must be addressed.

Simply put, if Apple’s serious about running games from iOS directly on a television, then this kind of input device is seriously needed. As nice as touch displays are for gaming on-screen, the moment I lift my head to watch on the television while mirroring my iPad, things get really out of control. My fingers start sliding off the buttons, and I constantly find myself looking down at the iPad instead of up at my television, defeating the purpose of mirroring my game in the first place. A controller would be ideal in this scenario, and I’d certainly welcome it into my gaming sessions.
