Startup under fire from major broadcasters for sending live TV to the iPhone

Aereo, a startup backed by media billionaire Barry Diller, is under severe heat from two groups of broadcasters, including ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and the local PBS station, for providing streams of the channels to mobile devices. Aereo, which launched just two weeks ago, is a $12/month NY area invite-only service that gives subscribers access to 27 locally broadcasted TV channels through the web browsers on their iOS devices.

According to SFGate, this past Thursday, the broadcasters filed suits in federal court against Aereo Inc., saying the service uses their content without permission. Aereo, who plans to open up their subscription based service to more subscribers on March 14th, seems cool about going to court with such large broadcasters, stating to SFGate that they’re looking forward to “a full and fair airing of the issues” in court.
