LAWL: iPhone 5 prototypes seen at Foxconn

LAWL: iPhone 5 prototypes seen at Foxconn9to5Mac is reporting that a source from Foxconn says prototypes of the next iPhone (iPhone 5? 6?) have been seen at the factories. Supposedly there are slight variations in the prototypes, but there is some consistancy.

The source said various sample devices are also floating around (which vary slightly from one another) so it is impossible to tell which one will be the final. Some things in common with all of them, however, are:

  • 4+ inch display (made by LG on at least one of them).
  • No teardrop-shaped devices as was rumored in the lead up to the iPhone 4S. Samples so far have been symmetrical in thickness. Also longer/wider.
  • None of the sample devices have the iPhone 4/4S form factor.
  • None of the devices are final versions,

Frankly, we think this is bullshit. These specs are generic enough that any Joe Blow that has read the echo chamber for more than a day could come up with them, and probably did. It’s also been beat into the ground all of the issues that would come with increasing the size of the iPhone screen from 3.5-inch. We’ll eat our hats if the next iPhone’s screen size is significantly different.

This rumor also has the next iPhone announcement coming this summer. That’s more likely than the screen-size increase, but I’m not taking any part of this rumor without a sea full of salt.

"Frankly, we think this is bullshit."

Yet you chose to write a post on the topic complete with a linkbait-worthy title.

You know... the Lawl really set it off. It shows that we clearly thought this was serious. I'm such a bad person, clearly.

Talking about prototypes that might or might not have been seen at a factory where they build a good portion of the products from some of the most prominent technology companies does not impress me. It's the tech journalism equivalent of saying you saw a yeti when you were taking a walk in the forest. Photo evidence or it didn't happen!

I'll agree that this rumor, or whatever you label it as, is pretty much a non-story rolled in sprinkles and adorned with a suggestive headline for kicks and laughs. Honestly I don't understand where they dig this tripe up, much less why they bother writing about it. Even for a rumor site, this is so vague and utterly crud that not even DigiTimes has written about it. Not yet at least.

I fully expect there to be the usual barrage of feces-smelling rumors just like this in the months leading up to whenever the next iPhone is released. It's a bad trend and it'll just keep going this year to. Unfortunately.

Just yesterday, over at my site, I went into length about why I too think the 4-inch iPhone is a brain-dead idea. Essentially it's too much trouble, too little payoff. Or so I see it anyway.

Dude... share a link. I'd love to read your thoughts.

Is that a new feature?

I am unsure. I think it's been around a little while if you have a URL in your DISQUS profile.
