cat on mac Weekly reminder to follow us, its CaturdayHey kitty, that’s not a touchscreen. If you want to get your greasy paw prints all over something go find your owner’s iPad. Other than that thought in my head, to this I say “ahhhhhh”. What do you think is on they screen that’s got him all angry? Maybe he doesn’t find Lolcats funny at all? Maybe he’s reading Macgasm and can’t believe that people in our comments this week were having a conversation about what Android phone they should dump their iPhone for. I’m pretty sure Joshua Schnell’s face looked like that when he read it. Oh, did you miss that? Then maybe you should follow us!

iTunes Match on iOS, for you international noobs

December 16, 2011

photo 1 iTunes Match on iOS, for you international noobsJosh just asked me how you get that iTunes Match goodness in your iPhone, so I thought I’d quickly share that with all of you.

Fire up the Settings app and tap Music. You might have to wait a few seconds for it to check your Store account and see if you’re subscribed, but there will be an iTunes Match setting. You’ll get a little warning that isn’t actually so little. It’s going to wipe out all of the music on your device. Yeah, don’t do this in an airport or anything. Make sure the “Show all music” setting is on too, so you can see everything and download it.

You can download the tracks manually, or as you stream a song. iTunes Match will save the song in your library so you can listen offline later.

Siri: Now legal to reverse engineer into the iPhone 4

December 16, 2011

NoS Siri: Now legal to reverse engineer into the iPhone 4File this report in the “This is cool, but you still won’t be getting Siri on your iPhone 4 any time soon” folder. After the release of iOS 5.0.1, previously encrypted files involving Siri are no longer encrypted. This will, supposedly, make the legal aspect of “hackers” releasing an iPhone 4 version of Siri less dire. I’m no legal expert, but I’ll assume that the people putting their necks in the line of fire from Apple’s legal council will have done the due diligence regarding the legalities.

Even if the legal issue is no longer in play, the technical issues are at this point. You pretty much still have to have access to an iPhone 4S in order to get this working for any lengthy period of time, and that defeats the purpose. At least, it defeats the practicality angle. I’m all for a group of the tech population tinkering to see if they can get it to work, but it still remains far out of reach for everyday iPhone 4 owners.

This also brings me to question what Apple is going to do with Siri once it leaves beta status. Heck, how long is it even going to remain in beta status? The longer it goes without official word from Apple, the less likely a full Siri port to older devices seems to me. That’s just my gut, though. I’m not placing any wagers. I’d like to know what you all think of the situation. Do you think the hackers will get a workable Siri port to the public? What about an official port from Apple themselves? Leave a comment on this post, and we’ll talk it out.

OnLive iPad app stuck in approval purgatory

December 16, 2011

onlive apple ipad OnLive iPad app stuck in approval purgatoryIt’s starting to look like OnLive may never actually make it to the App Store at this point. The popular cloud-based gaming service was supposed to have its client application on the App Store some time around December 7th, but the gaming application is still in purgatory and awaiting approval.

Geek.com asks:

Would Apple have a problem with OnLive? After all, those with fast internet connections will instantly be able to play games that easily eclipse Angry Birds and the other casual fare that saturates the App Store. It’s possible that Apple isn’t happy about a third-party app — from which it can’t directly profit — selling the best games on iOS.

You can sum up the answer in one word. I bet you can guess which one I’m thinking of, too. Apple will absolutely have a problem with this. The OnLive model threatens Apple’s App Store model. Instead of developers being forced to design games solely for the iPhone and iPad, which Apple obviously wants, they would be able to develop it for any platform that OnLive supports. OnLive then controls that gaming experience, and Apple does not. That’s a problem for Apple.

We’d love to see OnLive on the iPad, but we have a feeling it’s going to be a while before it actually shows up.
