The Business Software Association flip flops like a sandal convention
While the software alliance, which consists of most of the major players in the software sector, hasn’t done a complete 180, it is back-peddling a bit on its view of the Stop Online Piracy Act. (SOPA). The BSA released a statement via their blog acknowledging  the impending breach of free speech and privacy this bill is set to foster.

Valid and important questions have been raised about the bill. It is intended to get at the worst of the worst offenders. As it now stands, however, it could sweep in more than just truly egregious actors. To fix this problem, definitions of who can be the subject of legal actions and what remedies are imposed must be tightened and narrowed. Due process, free speech, and privacy are rights cannot be compromised.

Cost of passage into adulthood? One iPhone, not a car

Cost of passage into adulthood? One iPhone, not a carThe major character in most adolescent lives during their Holden Caulfield years tends to be a beat up old jalopy of a car. Many teenage adventures over the years have started with a tank of gas, nothing to do, and a whole lot of time to kill, but today’s generation has begun preferring, wait for it, smartphones.

Oh! Edo Towns just about maintains the Kariosoft fun

Oh! Edo Towns just about maintains the Kariosoft funThe last Kariosoft game we looked at was Grand Prix Story, a delightful motor racing simulator built on the success of the breakout Game Dev Story. Oh! Edo Towns is another ‘stick-to-the-formula’ title from the same Japanese developers keen to simulate every single activity known to man. We’ve had mega malls, video game development, hot springs, but we’ve never had towns. It’s an interesting area to avoid until now – after all, Sim City showed us just how popular virtual urban management can be. Surely Kariosoft can add its own unique charm to the subject?

Apple wins pornified URLs from squatterThinking about buying websites with Apple trademarks and directing them to porn sites for profit? You should probably think again. According to a report filed on Domain Name Wire, Apple has obtained access to: iphone4s.com, iphonecamforce.com, iPhonecam4s.com. iphoneporn4s.com, iphonesex4s.com, iphonexxforce.com, and porn4iphones.com from an Israeli company after filing a complain with the World Intellectual Property Organization.

The original complaint was filed back on November 3rd, but the complaint from Apple has been dropped now that the original company, MarkMonitor, has turned over the websites to Apple’s legal team.

Score is now Apple 1 – Porn 0.

Print your Instagram photos on canvas at CanvasPopSometimes you need to take those sexy hipster photos you take on Instagram and print them out. And, sometimes you want to print those photos out on canvas and not completely break your bank account. That time is now, considering that CanvasPop is currently letting Instagram users print their photos on canvas at the introductory price of $29.95.

The canvases come in two sizes, a 12×12 square and a 20×20 inch square. You also have two edge options, black and white, at no extra cost. Starting today you can sign in with your Instagram account, get access to your photos and get them printed directly to canvas in three pretty simple steps.

I’m thinking about pimping out the home office with a couple. Pretty nifty stuff. These could also make great holiday gifts so long as your photos don’t completely suck. Mine usually do.

Rumor: Apple to introduce NFC to iPhones in 2012

Rumor: Apple to introduce NFC to iPhones in 2012

According to Taiwanese production sources, both Microsoft and Apple are planning on including NFC (Near Field Communications) — the technology in your wave-to-pay credit cards — in their smartphone platforms. So, if Apple does include NFC in the next iPhone, what will that mean for users? Probably not much at first.

As with all new technology, it’s hard to get people to implement it until there is enough of an install base in the first place — a chicken and egg problem. What right-thinking company would start installing NFC transmitters before a significant number of people have NFC-enabled phones? None. Well, maybe they would if a strong force in the retail market led the way.

After giving it a bit of thought, I’ve come to a pretty interesting concept. If Apple is indeed including NFC in their next generation of iPhones, they are in a prime position to set the bar high. What if their entire retail presence was decked out in NFC transmitters? Apple is already on the path to making self-checkout easier. NFC could be their next step.

Another route Apple could take would be to partner with a big chain like Walmart or Target to enable NFC-assisted tasks. If the Target app could give you information about products and promotions by tapping your phone against a display, I think it could really add a lot to the experience, enough that Apple would consider the technology worthwhile, even. I can’t wait to see what happens.
