Instacast HD to drop tomorrow

November 22, 2011

Tomorrow’s the big day for Vemedio. According to a release from the company, their iPad offering, Instacast HD, will be available on the App Store for $4.99, starting tomorrow.

We know what you’re thinking, and the answer is yes, some people really do use their iPad for podcast consumption. Instacast HD shines when it comes to video podcasts, and since I’ve gone on the record about being more of a video podcast guy, this release is near and dear to my heart. We’ve been beta testing it for the last couple of weeks, and frankly, Instacast HD should be the only podcatcher you’re using on your iPad.

The UI is fantastic, and the new version comes with an integrated Download Manager, Push Notifications (super handy), and iCloud Sync. We’ll have a review up shortly. We just wanted to let you Instacast fans know that the HD version of the application will be available tomorrow on the App Store.

If you want to hear my thoughts on the application now, you can check out the latest episode of The AppOrchard Podcast.

Android, kind of like Windows XP when it comes to malware

McAfee has dropped a pretty large bomb on the mobile security industry today. According to the company’s third-quarter security report, Android is the primary target for new mobile malware, jumping 37 percent this quarter, which is on top of the 76 percent rise from last quarter.

The report has indicated that Android has become the exclusive target for all new mobile malware, making it the most attacked mobile operating system on the market currently.

Last quarter the Android mobile operating system (OS) became the most “popular” platform for new malware. This quarter Android became the exclusive platform for all new mobile malware. The Symbian OS (for Nokia handsets) remains the platform with the all-time greatest number of malware, but Android is clearly today’s target.

In other words:

Number of malware attacks found on iOS devices this quarter? Zero. Number of malware attacks found last quarter on iOS devices? Zero. Number of attacks found during the first quarter of 2011? Yeah, still zero.

Apple’s new iPad ad is all about love

November 22, 2011

All you need is love. One of Apple’s strong suits is their knack for producing high quality advertisements that evoke strong emotions. We’ve seen this play out for years with incredibly memorable campaigns. Recently, their ads have taken a turn for the personal.

The latest Apple ad focuses on how the iPad helps you do the things you love. From recording music to drawing a landscape to watching a movie in bed, this ad shows that while the iPad is great for content consumption, it does so much more than that.

Interestingly, this ad is a perfect example of what sets Apple apart from its competition. Instead of focusing solely on specs and numbers, this ad showcases experiences. From start to finish, it is about how the iPad 2 affects you and how you accomplish your passions. It’s hard to argue with that.

Apple’s attempt to tug at the heart strings is powerful and impressive. In the Steve Jobs bio, it was clear that Apple agonizes over their advertisements just as much as they do over their products. They only want the very best, and that shows. Apple ads continue to be a cut above the rest.

Ultrabook makers bring junk to an aluminium fight

November 22, 2011

Ultrabook manufacturers are looking into alternate materials to adorn their “Macbook Air Killers” as Apple gets first dibs on the machines used to crank out those beautiful unibody chassis matched with a price point that allows paying a premium for aluminum.  This is a move that could spell disaster for the new form factor before it is even out of the gate, at least for the beige box competitors.

Google Search app updated and redesigned for iPad

November 21, 2011

Well, this comes at no surprise. Today, Google rolled out an update to their iPad Google Search app. The update brought a redesign to the user interface. However, the coolest part of the entire update is its name – v1.0.0.8117.

So what’s new? Well for one, you can now view snapshots of webpages that you’ve visited in a new carousel view. Also, now you can scroll through results while your selected page loads in a new side-by-side view. My favorite additions are Google Instant, which shows search results as you’re typing, and a new view for your Google apps.

The update also brings some cool UI changes to the iPhone app. Go update now to see the other additions!

Via Google’s app page:

  • See search results and websites side-by-side to browse pages and results
  • Get to the right answer faster with Instant Previews and Google Instant
  • See images full-screen with image browsing
  • New visual UI for search history
  • Easy access to other Google apps

iOS users account for upwards of 90 percent of app revenue

November 21, 2011

We are the 90%

According to Gene Munster of Piper Jaffray (insert grain of salt here), Apple’s iOS is taking in the lion’s share of lifetime app revenue, and Google’s Android is making roughly an order of magnitude less. Are you shocked by this report? You shouldn’t be. Gene also estimates that only 1.3 percent of Android apps are for-pay while iOS sits at about 13.5 percent.

So, Android apps make about 7 percent of total lifetime mobile app revenue while iOS apps take between 85 and 90 percent. What does that mean as far as cash is concerned? Well, since the start of 2011, iOS apps have taken in roughly 3.4 billion USD. Android apps, by comparison, have made less than 240 million USD.

Gene then goes on to predict that Apple will continue to keep the lead in mobile app revenue for the next couple of years. He says they’ll be somewhere around the 70 percent area, but I’ll bet Apple would be more than happy to prove him wrong. Analysts, as I’m sure you know, are notoriously bad at accurately making Apple-related predictions.

Frankly, I hope that the Android market starts sucking less. Maybe Amazon’s Android app store combined with the entry of Android tablets that aren’t awful might mean developers can start making money on non-Apple app stores. That’d be a nice change of pace, eh? In any case, it just goes to show that marketshare isn’t everything. iOS devs will continue to rake in the dough, and there is no end in sight. From Apple’s perspective, Android can just keep on “Winning” for all they care.

People want tablets 130 percent more today than some other day, apparently

Apple Insider reported today that a survey of 3,034 consumers shows that Apple’s iPad as well as the Kindle Fire from Amazon are poised to be the only two players in the tablet game this holiday season, capturing 65 percent and 22 percent of the entire market, respectively. Samsung captured the third spot with a measly 4 percent of those surveyed.

I love it when you guys participate in the fun with us. This picture was sent to me by @Sean600. What he didn’t know when he found this is it is actually 1 of a 3 part series by Jeff Presnail. I’m not much of a cat person but I would totally take that cat. Then we would chill on the couch and play Xbox together. This cat is rad.
