Wired launches app guide magazine with 400 editorial reviews

Wired, in collaboration with Gizmodo, just launched their app guide sporting 400 reviews. The app highlights the “essential tools for every type of smartphone user.” This includes iOS, Android, and Windows Phone 7. It even includes a Wired essential bundle of 18 “must-have” applications.

From Angry Birds to Zite, mobile apps are redefining how we experience the world, whether we’re at work or play. But with hundreds of thousands of apps available, choosing the right software is becoming increasingly complicated. That’s where we come in. Our experts braved the app stores to search, download, test, crash, complain, and update—all so you don’t have to. Organized into seven categories—social, games, lifestyle, news, arts & entertainment, photography, and productivity—these are the apps worth knowing about.

The magazine isn’t an instapaper collection of 400 articles. Rather, it’s an app designed to be a magazine. Its layout proves that interface design was right up there in importance along with the content. It features iPad gestures and lets you launch the Apple App Store via app links. The reviews are even categorized based on their topic and function.

So what are you waiting for? For $5.99, you can have the perfect app shopping manual at the tip of your fingers. Use the app to see if a potential download was mentioned, buy a copy for your long-lost friend, or just check it to see if your app made the big leagues. Of course, if you’d prefer to stick to the App Store itself, it’s up to you.
