Hard drive prices may be on the rise due to shortages, could affect Apple

seagate harddrive Hard drive prices may be on the rise due to shortages, could affect Apple

Get that new hard-drive you’ve been eye-balling as soon as possible because prices are on the rise. Seagate and Western Digital have both warned that flooding in Thailand has begun taking its toll on both companies’ factories, directly and indirectly, limiting their output capabilities.

According to analyst firm ISH iSupply, 25 percent of hard drives come from Thailand. Seagate has stated that they expect the shortage to last multi-quarters.

Timothy Leyden, Western Digital COO, said that “in addition to hard drive production stoppages, the flooding also impacted the company’s assembly test and slider facilities, as well as supply of components from other vendors, and is expected to constrain capacity for several quarters.”

Of course, the shortage will have an influence on more than just competent vendors. Companies such as Apple may have a hard time getting their hands on enough supply to roll out product updates in the future. Tim Cook mentioned on the financial call this week that Apple is anticipating shortages in the near future. Some people are already seeing pricing increases by 25–50 percent. If you’re in the market for a new hard drive, we would recommend that you run out and make a purchase soon. Prices will certainly be on the rise as supply begins to dry up.

Tip: Quickly delete, or move, applications in Launchpad

launchpad tip Tip: Quickly delete, or move, applications in Launchpad

Apple’s been known to sneak functionality into applications by adding basic keyboard shortcuts like holding down the option key to provide alternative information. They’ve done it again in Launchpad. Instead of holding down the mouse button on an application to engage the ability to move or delete applications, all you have to do is press and hold the option key.

It may not save you a lot of time, but it’ll certainly come in handy when you need to delete something quickly and move on. Pushing and releasing the option key will toggle the delete and move functionality on and off again. Push and it’s on. Release and it’s off.

Note: Keep in mind that you can only delete applications that have been purchased in the Mac App Store from Launchpad

New York Times posts its review of Steve Jobs biography

steve jobs laughing New York Times posts its review of Steve Jobs biography

If you want to know how Walter Isaccson’s official biography of Steve Jobs reads, you can head on over to the New York Times website and read a review. The two page article focuses a little more on the book and how it reads, as opposed to spilling the beans with spoiler after spoiler.

An excerpt from the New York Times Review:

Mr. Isaacson takes his readers back to the time when laptops, desktops and windows were metaphors, not everyday realities. His book ticks off how each of the Apple innovations that we now take for granted first occurred to Mr. Jobs or his creative team. “Steve Jobs” means to be the authoritative book about those achievements, and it also follows Mr. Jobs into the wilderness (and to NeXT and Pixar) after his first stint at Apple, which ended in 1985.

There are some spoilers, so if you’re in an absolute blog lockdown until the biography is released on Monday, you may want to steer clear. But all in all, the New York Times review reads like a review, not like an organization trying to cash in on page views by spilling the beans to everyone before the book is even released. We recommend giving it a read. It’s a nice preview of what’s in store for us on Monday.

Soul Calibur coming “soon” to iOS

soulcalibur ios Soul Calibur coming soon to iOS

The original Soul Calibur is about to get some iOS love “soon” according to Carlson Choi, VP of marketing at Namco Bandai. We’re not talking about the new fan dangled Soul Calibur games either; we’re talking about the original 1998 game that was eventually ported to the Dreamcast and then later made an appearance on the Xbox 360′s Xbox Live Marketplace in 2008.

There’s not much to say other than it’s coming “soon”, but as a fan of the original, I’m pretty excited to hear that it’s going to be getting some iOS love in the very near future. Hopefully the game gets a nice little graphics bump along the way.
