mac pro lion Apple updates unreleased 10.7.2 and iCloud betas

Though not yet available to the public, Apple has updated the beta software for OS X 10.7.2 and their upcoming cloud-storage system, iCloud. The build number for 10.7.2 is now at 11C40 with a whopping 730MB download footprint. Interestingly, the 10.7.2 beta has been seeded since July, before developers received the 10.7.1 beta, and are now being asked to kick the tires primarily on Airport, AppKit, graphics drivers, the Mac App Store, Mail and Spotlight. OS X 10.7 Lion was released in July by way of Apple’s App Store and marked the first time Apple has focused on digital distribution for a major operating system update, and the first point releases (10.7.1) dropped last week. As per usual, there’s no release date set for 10.7.2, but three builds have been released to developers so far and it’s a fair guess that we’ll see it this fall when iCloud is launched in all its splendor.

Android moving its browser towards Webkit, kinda like the iPhone

Webkit icon gold Android moving its browser towards Webkit, kinda like the iPhone  + Android Logo Leaning Android moving its browser towards Webkit, kinda like the iPhone

This story might get confusing, so I’m going to start at the beginning. Webkit is an open browser standard that Google already uses in its chrome browser. When I say open, I mean it. Apple help to create webkit from other Web browser standards. It uses webkit throughout Safari and the Mac OS to render web pages. They also use it for Safari on iOS, since the desktop and mobile version are very closely related. What that means is, if you develop to a webkit standard, you’re going to be in pretty good shape no matter what device it is seen on. Then comes the confusing part.

Sonos almost ready to Lionify the Sonos Desktop Controller

xyaC.Screen shot 2011 08 23 at 13 49 09 Sonos almost ready to Lionify the Sonos Desktop ControllerIf you’re rocking a Sonos device and made the update to Lion before realizing that the Sonos Desktop Controller doesn’t work with 10.7, you’re probably pretty annoyed that your speakers have been collecting dust since Lion shipped. Mums been the word since the update, with Sonos only letting users know that they’re “working” on an update in a forum post.

Apparently Apple made some pretty large SMB changes in Lion that make it impossible for Sonos to create new music shares of music libraries. Sonos has apparently been working with Apple to get the problem squared away.

The wait is almost over.

Andrew Schulert, VP of Quality at Sonos, Inc. has sent us an update, letting us know that Sonos has begun beta testing the new Desktop Controller for Lion, and should all go well, an update is forthcoming in the next couple of weeks.

Great news for those who can’t get work done without blaring some music.

Hi Dave, Apple got their iPad design from 2001: A Space Odyssey

In what has to be one of the most hilarious, sad, and genius attempts at discrediting a patent, Samsung has pointed to a 2001: A Space Odyssey clip that lasts about a minute in the famous Kubrick film as an example of previous artwork existing. The clip shows a couple of astronauts using a tablet that looks an awful lot like an iPad or a GalaxyTab.

We’re not joking either. Samsung is a little more badass than we give them credit for, or they’re seriously reaching. We’ll let you decide which of the two categories you want to file them in.

Proving there’s prior artwork available that looks like the iPad could lay to rest a lot of the legal battles that Apple has filed against its competitors for ripping off the design, should a judge actually agree with Samsung’s claims.

We’re not lawyers, and we have no idea how this could play out, but we have to admit that the tablet looks nothing like Apple’s tablet, except maybe the display that takes up the entire device. To be completely honest, when stumbling on the image in question, I originally thought that Samsung was claiming that the table the astronauts are eating at was the prior artwork. That may make a bit more sense, wouldn’t it?

Still making the rounds is the rumor that the iPhone 5 will be a dual-mode CDMA and GSM world-phone that will work on both networks, without having to buy a new phone.

The confirmation comes from TechCrunch who was tipped off by a developer who noticed that a new Apple device that is “decidedly dual-mode” has begun appearing in their logs. The phone managed to be uniquely identified using MNC/MCC codes from both Verizon and AT&T.

RHCP iTunes iTunes, Ping, the artist, and you

Ping has been kind of a dud. There are a lot of great artists on the site and it’s a cool way to share with your Twitter fans what music you like and are buying, but there’s a disconnect between the form and function. I think that today’s feature of iTunes, the live stream of the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ new album I’m With You, can be one way to really get people involved.
