iOS 5 beta 4 released, over the air updating enabled

July 22, 2011

Apple Inc., iPad, iPhone

Apple has just released iOS 5 beta 4, and much to our surprise they have enabled over the air updating!

Since the announcment of iOS 5, we have been waiting to see traces of over the air updates, and today is our lucky day!

Here is what we know, directly from the release document for iOS 5 beta 4:

iOS 5 beta 4 can be installed using over the air software update from devices that have iOS 5 beta 3 installed. Over the air software update can be initiated by choosing General > Software Update in Settings.

We will be installing this update and filling you in on all of the latest and greatest as soon as possible.

My iPhone feels like my iPhone again. This update is the best. I'm not sure if I want  to lay it down by the fire like @facebook-501386943:disqus does, but it's close. ;-)

after a long night of wine and cuddling, iOS 5 beta 4 w/ OTA updates and I are still besties.

i think beta 3 introduced things that were broken on purpose just so beta 4 could come along in a few days and fix them. i noticed a different font in Messaging (only for what you type), wrap issues in Mail, and Camera seemed to alternate between putting pictures at the beginning or end of the camera roll. things that don't really interrupt anything, but are fixable with an update.

glad we've gotten this far. things have never been less complicated, so it might finally be possible for my parents to finally get an iPhone in September.

i want to tell Over-The-Air Updates how much I'll respect them in the morning.

Enabled, but not working yet in this beta release.

This release, 11 days after the past beta release, does show that things are inching closer to a production release

I just did mine OTA. It was erroring out earlier but I think that was due to their servers being hammered. :)

Nice.
