The Apple Lisa was the company’s first foray into a computer with a graphical user interface. It shipped with a mouse, cooperative multitasking, word processing and several other features that were a major leap past other personal computers at the time — including the Apple II.
The project started in 1978, and shipped in 1983, but was quickly eclipsed by the smaller, cheaper Macintosh.
The iconic white MacBook may just not be in Apple’s long term plans. The laptop edition is currently severely constrained, and authorized resellers seem to be completely sold out according to Apple Insider. There has been some mentions online, like the one over at Cult of Mac, that Apple could be preparing to discontinue the white MacBook or replace it entirely. The last major update for the MacBook came back in May of 2010, and brought with it a graphics card update, and a new Intel 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo processor.
Apple is well on its way towards updating their MacBook Air and Mac Pro lineups according to rumors, but the time frame for release has been pretty touch and go, with no firm announcement from the company. According to Mark Gurman over at 9to5 Mac, Apple is gearing up to launch their updated hardware in mid-July, not long before their financial results call on Tuesday, July 19th.
In launching the new Vatican News website NEWS.VA, Pope Benedict is shown using an iPad 2 to browse through the site, and sends a tweet announcing the launch.
From the video it looks like Pope Benedict is also being shown how to use the iPad, and that the tweet is pre-written for him, all he had to do was hit the “Send” button. So I wouldn’t call the Pope an iPad user, per se, but at least he’s seen one. Who knows, maybe he’ll want one now that he’s played with it.
According to RBC analyst Mike Abamsky, Apple will not be releasing a cheap iPhone 4S this year. Instead they’ll be making the iPhone 3GS free with a carrier contract, the iPhone 4 would be $99, and the iPhone 5 would come in at the $199/$299 price points. We weren’t going to run this one, considering analysts seem to be throwing darts these days, but it stands in direct contrast to news yesterday that Apple would be releasing both the iPhone 4S and the iPhone 5 in the next 12 months, cancelling the iPhone 4, and keeping the iPhone 3GSon the market.
Fire up Software Update and find new versions of Java for Mac OS X ready to be downloaded. Apple released update 5 for Snow Leopard users and update 10 for Leopard users.
Both updates bring several improvements and fixes and bring Java to version 1.6.0_26. You can find the change-logs and links for both updates after the break.
At least it is just as much criticised as the early version of MobileMe was, back in July 2008. Apple promised to improve MobileMe and give the users what they expected to get for their money. And it did. Apple is now already reaching out to their disappointed pro-user community and promising updates bringing what they want. Until then, users can apply for a refund.
If you want to keep your shiny new app though, and are willing to wait (or actually are able to wait) until Apple makes Final Cut Pro X usable for professionals, you can now read your way through a new Questions & Answers document, which Apple released today.
Students, get ready to rejoice in the street, riot in the mess hall, save yourself a lot of reading time, and spend a lot more time in the bar. Lion gives you the ability to save audio of selected text and import it directly into iTunes. That’s right — Text-to-Speech will now let you save your selection into iTunes so that you can listen to your course notes instead of actually having to read them.
All kidding aside, this nifty little task could be used in a variety of ways to save you time and energy. Heck, you could even listen to the Macgasm website while riding the bus in the morning. We do afterall have a full-text RSS feed set up.
Man, I can’t wait for Lion.
Note: Apparently this is also available in Snow Leopard. You just have to enable it in services.
