One minute Firefox is faster, the next Chrome. All the while Internet Explorer plays catch up to everyone. Browser speed boasting has long been a pastime of developers and the e-peen habit has moved unsurprisingly to the mobile space.
First came this video from Microsoft back in April when Windows Phone Mango posted a higher custom-built HTML5 page test score than both Android and the iPhone. Victory, it seems, was short-lived, as the iOS 5 dev kit has already shown that MobileSafari is leaving its rivals in the dust.

It really seems like the iPhone can do just about anything.
Now, it can even help detect signs of skin cancer, thanks to an app named Skin Scan.
Skin Scan can analyze photos of moles taken from an iPhone or iPod touch for possible signs of skin cancer. Multiple photos can be added to the app to monitor any moles or spots for changes over time.
Skin Scan uses “fractal map tissue analysis,” a fully automated, self-improving analysis algorithm.
Which sounds pretty cool.
Of course, a doctor is a lot better choice if you have a suspicious lump, but this app is a great example of what can be done with the technology in our pockets. The app can even tell you where the closest dermatology office is located.

The site stats for Flickr, Yahoo’s photo-sharing service, reveal that the iPhone 4 is officially the most popular camera among the site’s users. The smartphone surpassed the popular digital SLRS made by Canon and Nikon a few days ago and now leads the upload charts.
Accordingly, the newest iPhone generation is also on the top of the smartphone popularity list, directly followed by the iPhone 3G in second place, the 3GS in third and the HTC Evo 4G in fourth. Although not technically a smartphone, the iPod touch also makes an appearance on that list and is the fifth most popular smartphone-camera used by Flickr’s community.

According to a new study from Needham analyst Charlie Wolf, Apple has stolen back some market share from Android in the March quarter.

It’s clearly release day over at Apple Inc. Just minutes ago they released the brand new Final Cut Pro X, and now they’ve pulled the trigger on the brand new, 3GB Time Capsule. It’s finally happened. Apple has released Final Cut Pro X to the masses, along with Compressor and Motion. All three applications are available only on the Mac App Store, and weigh in at $299.99, $49.99, and $49.99 respectively. That brings the total to $399.97, well under the $999.00 for Final Cut Studio, but doesn’t come complete with Soundtrack Pro or DVD Studio Pro, both of which may be offered on the Mac App Store at later date.

“Oh, Wow.” That was my first reaction to Writer for Mac. My next one was “Freaking sexy!” Ok, I admit — I’m very much a sucker for minimalist things (I tend to avoid clutter, bloat, and unnecessary complexity), especially when it comes to software. That said, Writer for Mac is the cleanest writing environment I’ve yet seen for the Mac. Yes, I’ve tried WriteRoom, ByWord, and others. They are good, and I’m certainly not discounting them by any means, but Writer just has that last level of polish that makes it feel “right.” It feels like how an Apple-designed writing app should feel. You could even say it’s what TextEdit could have been.
