Apple is well on its way towards updating their MacBook Air and Mac Pro lineups according to rumors, but the time frame for release has been pretty touch and go, with no firm announcement from the company. According to Mark Gurman over at 9to5 Mac, Apple is gearing up to launch their updated hardware in mid-July, not long before their financial results call on Tuesday, July 19th.
We know, courtesy of Apple, that Lion will ship in July, but we don’t have a firm date in place for that yet either. It’s been stated previously that Apple’s holding back product upgrades until Lion ships so that new users don’t have to go through the pain of upgrading their machines immediately after purchase. If the rumor is to be believed, once we get an official announcement about Lion, we will also start to see some hardware upgrades that could include new Mac minis in addition to the rumored Mac Pro refresh.
Leading up to today’s rumor it was expected that new products would be shipping in late July or early August. Blogger Brian Tong, on advice from a contact, has predicted that shipments would be closer to mid/late summer than early July. Previously, Tong had predicted that the iMac would see updates (with Thunderbolt) months before the products actually showed up in an announcement. Currently both sources have pretty decent track records when it comes to Apple rumors, and the fact that they’re both predicting that a MacBook Air and Mac Pro refresh is close on the horizon is enough for us to get a little bit excited around here. The difference between the two predictions is only a matter of a couple of weeks at this point, so either way, we’re polishing off the old credit card and getting ready to make a purchase.
